I've lived in Florida all my life, and I still feel like I've only scratched the surface on all that there is to see and do in the Sunshine State. Thankfully, my family's love of travel and adventure has brought us out to experience some Florida's "hidden gems" — one of which is Gulf County in Northwest Florida.
The funny thing about Gulf Coast, Florida is that it's just a few hours from where I went to college, so you would think I would be very familiar with the area. The truth is that I only ventured out to the beaches on a few ocassions. It wasn't until I got married, had our daughter, and then moved back down south that I've had the urge to explore more of the 43 miles of natural shoreline that encompass Gulf County.
And our favorite time to visit Gulf County has to be, hands down, in the fall, when the weather is slightly cooler and the westward beaches produce the most amazing sunsets.
Here are 5 reasons why you should visit Gulf County with your family this Fall.
- From the end of August until mid-November, the secluded beauty of Gulf County is even more secluded. That means you practically have miles and miles of beaches, beckoning bayous, and lakeshore activities all to yourself. Part of the appeal of the area is being with nature, and the Fall months provide an even more peaceful experience.
- With two time zones, only two stoplights and spotty Wi-Fi, the beautiful beaches of St. Joseph Bay truly let you unplug and connect with the most important thing - your family.
- The sunsets I mentioned above are really something to be seen. The white sand peninsula of Cape San Blas has some of the most spectacular sunsets in the state. In fact, GCFL is known as #championofsunsets.
- Getting away for the weekend is easy because you don't have to worry about leaving your fur-babies at home. Leashed pets are welcome on the beach at all times and most rental homes will throw out the red carpet for your furry friends!
- Every experience feels like a adventure. Where else can you camp right on the beach and gaze at the stars? Quietly kayak on the Dead Lakes and see pre-historic looking animals and trees? It's outdoor family adventures like these that will stick with you children for years and years to come. In fact, it's these unique experiences that have families coming back to GCFL year after year ... a family tradition.

I love the Gulf Coast of Florida but I don't get over there as often as I would like! My grandparents live in Naples and I keep meaning to get over there to visit them...with a side trip to the beach!
