While summer break is winding down, there's still time for a last minute road trip before Labor Day--the official end of summer. But before you get on the highway for that final getaway, the NAIC (National Association of Insurance Commissioners) wants to make sure you're aware of what your auto insurance covers if you happen to have trouble on the road.
According to an April 2011 NAIC survey, 40 percent of Americans incorrectly believe their car insurance will cover the replacement of personal items stolen from their vehicle and one-third of Americans believe their auto insurance automatically covers a rental car.
To help overcome these misconceptions, the NAIC has five tips for a stress-free road trip.
Tips for a Stress-free Road Trip
1. Confirm your car insurance is active and premiums are up-to-date. Have a current copy of your insurance card in the car.
2. Check to see if your policy includes roadside assistance. You can be covered for towing, fuel delivery, lockout service, jump-starts and more.
3. If renting a car, check if your current policy includes coverage, and verify limitations with your agent. Some credit cards offer rental coverage, so check with your credit card company to determine if that is an option.
4. If rental car coverage is not included in your policy, consider adding an insurance rider for a small fee or purchasing coverage from the rental car company. Make sure you don’t duplicate benefits from your existing auto, health or home insurance policy.
5. Verify your homeowners or renters insurance covers the theft of personal items from your vehicle, especially if you are planning to carry expensive items in your car such as golf clubs, video or digital cameras or laptops.
Additionally, it never hurts to have the number of a good car accident injury attorney in Los Angeles in case of fender-benders on the road. You never know when you will need help, and not having to search for a lawyer will save time and money.
Adrienne Gordon
take the extra 10 minutes to get gas off the highway, it is cheaper.

We travel mostly with our kids, a good tip is to keep a tote bag handy for road trips with the kids. We have a tote bag loaded with special toys, books and cd's that the kids only play with while we go on trips. I even tend to add a new item or two for the kids to enjoy.
Thanks so much

We don't leave on any long car trip without snacks and drinks for the kids! It breaks up the boredom.

Stop at parks along the way so the kids can get rid of some energy and then can relax again for the ride.

One tip to keep in mind, especially for longer trips, would be to take your car into the mechanic for a check-up to make sure all the vitals (brakes, battery, fluid levels, tire pressure, lights, etc.) are in tip-top shape. For me, the added peace of mind knowing the car is highway-ready takes a lot of the stress out of driving. Thanks for the chance to enter!

Always have snacks and drinks with you in the car. You may have the best of intentions to stop for something but often times (especially if you are traveling in unfamiliar territory) you may not be able to find food and drink when you want/need it.

Don't be afraid to ditch the car and explore on foot or via public transportation. You often end up seeing and experiencing so much more than you might if you were bound to your car.
Also for when you are in the car, make sure you have plenty of water and snacks. The other thing I always have in the car are wipes. Great for freshening up on the go.

When my son was young and we went on road trips, I would pack a "surprise bag." He would not know what kinds of little games, run-off pages, etc I put in the bag until we were on our way. He would get one surprise every hour or two which he would play with, read, listen to, etc. He then had an empty travel reward bag where each "surprise" was placed. He could then use them over again when he wanted to do so. But he could not have another surprise until he put the one he was playing with in his travel bag. This was really a lot of fun for him and mommy, too!

A staple for the kids is a "busy bag" they get to pack it themselves (while we are packing other things) and is just as important...road trip games, snacks, crayons, game systems, and cards are just a few of the things my 3 daughters have included. ~A couple of weeks ago it was my son's 27th birthday. He wanted our family to take a road trip. My husband suggested instead of taking several cars we would just rent a van. Not only so everyone would be included in all the conversations but to save on fuel!! This worked out great, we ALL had a great time!! So my tip is rent a van when several others are going on the same trip!!~

If you have multiple children get them each a roll of quarters. They can use these quarters at the destination in game rooms, etc. BUT, everything he/she/they act out, you ask them for a quarter back.

My best roadtrip tip is for children. Make sure you have plenty of things to keep them entertained. The beat purchase I've made is the outlet adapter which allows your cigarette lighter in the car to be used as a regular power outlet. It's great for charging iPods and gameboys!

If you ever have to travel through Death Vally Do it at night. We drove through in the early morning when I was a kid and a 8Track tape melted into the carpeted back window shelf. The main tip it to be aware of the weather conditions that are predicated and typical conditions for the area that your are going to and traveling through as well.
Troy DObson

The BEST roadtripping tip is.... the ABC game. You'll be looking for every letter of the alphabet, in alphabetical order, although the letter can be located anywhere in the word. Say there is a fruit stand with a sign for Granny Smith apples — there's your A. The exit for the Brooklyn Bridge would cover B, Road Closed is C and so on. First one to the letter Z wins. If you see "Road Closed," however, you may not feel so lucky. ENJOY! 🙂
Also, pee break BEFORE you leave!

It seems we always stock up the kids with electronics, books, road games ect...but sitting there driving, is well, usually very boring. My best advice is audio books. They have audio books that fall under every type of category for all interest. After just finishing a move across the country, audio books allows one to listen to something that keeps your interest and stops you from counting down the minutes and hours left before you stop for the day!
Norma Diaz
Take food and drinks and napkins. Bring a few pillows to rest your head on if you're not driving and maybe even blankets because you never know if you might get a flat tire and it just might be really cold outside. A cell phone and cell phone charger is really important also.

Have the car serviced before you leave and bring lots of snacks and drinks and lots and lots of moist wipes 🙂
Also bring dry-erase board and markers and a copy of a road map of the trip. Mark the beginning, the end and your daily goals on the map in red. Indicate special attractions you want to visit and places you will be stopping for the night on the map. Have the children track the progress every day in a different color. Keep the map and use parts of it in your trip album or scrap book.

We road trip a LOT and came up with our own essentials kit that includes first aid essentials as well as a few other meds you may not use for first aid but would pay a ton for roadside such as tums and excedrin (you can pick your own based on individual needs...hubby gets heartburn and I get headaches sometimes) plus antibacterial wipes. We pack most of our own food in coolers and bring gallon jugs of water as well (you can fill 1/2 gallon and freeze the night before, then fill the rest of the way with cold water in the AM...keeps it cold all day!). And finally...entertainment! Definitely have to bring plenty of stuff for the kids to do, plus we have games we play on the road...we traveled from CA to MA once and counted Swift brand trucks the whole way...we counted over 500 and the kids had competitions to see who spotted them first...really cuts down on the bickering! Happy trails to all!! 🙂

My road trip tip is to get everything together the night before. This allows you to see exactly what you will be packing and also lets everyone think if there is something they may have forgotten BEFORE setting out on the road. This includes setting out the clothing everyone will be wearing, avoiding that "I don't know what to wear" problem. Thanks.

My Tip, Take Liquid Sanitizer with you!!!
Not one rest room I've ever stopped at on the Interstate highways has ever had hand sanitizer; the liquid soap is supposedly adequate- and if is, until you pull the door handle to leave, thus getting swamped with germs and toilet bacteria.
Also, for added peace of mind, some clorox wipes would be a wise addition, just in case you're forced to use a porta-potty somewhere along the way.

My road trip tip is to have plenty of snacks and videos to watch for the kids. Make sure everyone goes to bathroom right before you leave and the car is gassed up. You get most of your miles done when you're first heading out and excited about the trip. Drive at night so the kids sleep and there are fewer cars on the road. Get a good night's sleep before the trip so you stay awake!

Love road trips. For the divas and I road trips are bonding time so we don't all tune out with individual dvd players/ipods etc.
Some of our fave tips:
Make a road trip playlist- here's a partial of ours to get some ideas- http://www.myloonyverse.com/2010/06/divas-ultimate-road-trip-playlist.html
Pack or buy snacks/picnic foods and eat where you can get out and stretch your legs/run off some of the energy
Whenever possible stay in hotels with a pool
Give everyone a journal/photo book and their own camera (even a disposable) so everyone has their own memories
Have things to do that don't have lots of little pieces- some we like are Etch A Sketch, Rubik's Cube, etc
If you are driving far and will be stopping several nights along the way pack one bag for each night with everyone's clothes etc and one with the toiletries etc so you only have a couple of things to carry in.
Sorry didn't mean to write a novel. 😉

No matter how old your kids are, or even if only adults are going, be sure to have plenty of disposable hand wipe towels. Hands get dirty whether you're snacking or changing a tire and I hate having dirty hands when I'm out in the middle of nowhere.

I would suggest packing a boat load of snacks and drinks for the kids and some extra caffine for the driver. Especially if it's going to be a long roadtrip!! 🙂

My family takes mini-road trips to state parks and landmarks. They are cheap, nearby, and there are tons I haven't been too. For example, there is an aquarium that I didn't know about within three hours, so we drove up there one weekend. It was great.

Pack snacks so you can eat heathy and cheap on the road. Tell a friend/family the route you plan on taking and check in. If you're going out of town don't post it on FB or Twitter...you never know who might choose to take advantage of an empty house.
Christina
I do a lot of pre-planning - food, drinks, where we'll stop, looking at the map at home - just in case. There's room for a little spontaneity, but planning ahead really helps make any trip more comfortable! Also, changes of shoes sometimes helps (mud, etc.).

Buy large bags of chip, cookies, and snacks and divide them up into snack-size baggies. Also cut up fruits and veggies for the snack-size baggies too. A baggie full of frozen grapes is a great healthy way to cool off on a long road trip!

I love road trips, but it can be difficult to do with children. My tips are to take a long lots of toys and other things to keep the kids occupied as much as possible during the trip. Also, plan to make lots of bathroom stops because they will happen! Let the kids get out and run off some of their energy when you stop for potty breaks!

My best tip has to do with buying gas. I was always brought up that you make sure that your car has a full tank of gas before you leave. And I always used to do that . But with the rising price of gas, and my living in New York state, land of taxes, when I am headed south, I wait until I hit New Jersey before I get gas since it's considerably cheaper there.
But gas where it's cheap, and plan your trip so you fill up when it is least expensive!
Thanks for the giveaway!

When we have a 8 hour or longer drive we usually head out around 9pm and with the dark and a movie playing in the back for the kids we can usually do then entire drive while they sleep. We try to plan our arrival time usually for 10 am or so for our time share check in but we found that travel at night at least on the way there usually works because everyone is sleeping and it is dark out.

A tip that save my sanity especially when traveling with my younger siblings is playing "Road side ABC's" its where you have to find letters only on road signs, no liscense plates and start at A and go all the way to Z, and 2 people cant call the same letter! Its very fun and for the little ones that are learning their abc's they focus extremely hard on the road looking for signs! It quiets them down for awhile, especially if there is a small prize offered to who wins, like picking a treat at the next gas station, the next movie watched, or gettin to ride shotgun next 🙂
