This post is brought to you by Hilton Garden Inn. All opinions are my own.
Regular readers of Mommy Musings already know how much I love to travel. One of the purposes of this blog is to inspire families to go out on new adventures, explore new places and try new things.
While most of the families I know reserve their vacation time for summer and spring break, it's safe to say that we all need an extra getaway or two in between. And you don't need an "official" holiday to do it!
Hilton Garden Inn’s newest campaign, “Declare Your Own Holiday” encourages families to embark on a weekend getaway on their own terms. Happy that the kids are back in school? Make it your own "Yay! Back to School is Here Day" and spend a weekend at your local Hilton Garden Inn to celebrate. Always wanted to go para-sailing, zipling or swim with dolphins? Make up your own “Try Something New Day" and go out and do it! The possibilities of declaring your own holiday are endless!
Did you know that 83% of parents would like to celebrate non-traditional holidays compared to 71% of non-parents? If there isn't a holiday to celebrate, parents will push to have one created. A majority (92%) would like to see a new holiday created, compared to 79% of non-parents.
This year, Hilton Garden Inn is working with Travel Channel’s Kinga Philipps to inspire travelers to take some much-deserved time off to discover new places, connect with loved ones, and breathe easy.
To make the most of a getaway, Kinga recommends the following tips for travelers:
- Embrace the Culture: Scope out unique events, festivals and fairs that are exclusive to the region and eat like a local - skip the chain restaurants! Visitor centers and community calendars are great resources to find local gems - you can't find everything in guide books.
- Just Breathe: Forget about your "to-do" list and stresses back home - embrace vacation mode! Make the most of your experience by reminding yourself to be present in the moment.
- Connect with Your Inner Child: Don't be afraid to play! Challenge yourself to embrace your surroundings and live in the moment - run through a field of flowers, ride a rollercoaster, indulge in a funnel cake at a fair, whatever your heart desires. Keep it fun and light-hearted. You'll thank yourself later.
So what holiday do you want to declare? I think I would declare something crazy (at least to me anyway) like "No Technology Day", where my family spends the weekend at a new destination completely unplugged. A little scary to think about, but imagine all the things we could do when we're not connected to cell phones, tablets, TV or the internet!
