My daughter is now at the perfect age to help me in the kitchen. I love the extra assistance I get and I know she is learning a valuable life skill in the process— but did you also know that kids who participate in the kitchen with their parents, preparing meals and snacks, develop a higher sense of pride and self-esteem for what they eat later on in life?
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services wants to help children apply the nutrition education they receive in school to their everyday lives. To encourage kids in grades 4-12 to have a part in meal preperation, they're hosting a coof-off!
The 2014 “Fresh for Florida Kids” Student Chef CookOff is currently running in multiple Florida cities, but the dealine is drawing near— with the cook-off ending on September 15, 2014.
To participate, kids in grades 4-12 need to submit their snacktime recipe featuring at least one fruit or vegetable. Already have a great healthy snack idea? Enter your snack recipe now.
On September 15, 45 qualifying participants will be selected to participate in a cook-off. All regional Cook-Off contestants will be given a $50 gift certificate as reimbursement for ingredients and travel expenses. All prizing will be awarded at each Cook-Off. Cook-offs will be held in 9 Florida regions and judged by local celebrities. Locations and dates as follows:
- Tampa: Central/West – September 27, 2014
- Tallahassee: Northwest – October 11, 2014
- Jacksonville: Northeast – October 25, 2014
- Miami: South – November 1, 2014
- Orlando: Central – November 15, 2014
Three FIRST PLACE winners (one from each grade category) at each Cook-Off will win a certificate for a Publix Aprons Cooking School class and a $100 gift card to Sports Authority!
Three SECOND PLACE winners (one from each grade category) at each Cook-Off will win a certificate for a Publix Aprons Cooking School class and a $75 gift card to Sports Authority!
Three THIRD PLACE winners (one from each grade category) at each Cook-Off will win a certificate for a Publix Aprons Cooking School class and a $50 gift card to Sports Authority!
Sound fun!? My 10-year-old daughter thought so and came up with her own after-school snack creation. She calls this PBH&J Apple Dippers - that's Peanut Butter, Honey & Jelly combined to make a tasty dip for sliced apples (her favorite fruit!). Here's her recipe:
Peanut Butter, Honey & Jelly Apple Dippers Recipe
Ingredients (makes 4 servings)
- 4 medium sized apples, cored & sliced
- 6 tablespoons peanut butter
- 4 tablespoons jelly
- 2 tablespoons raw honey
Directions
- Combine peanut butter, jelly and honey in a bowl and stir until smooth.
- Seperate into four smaller portions and serve with apple slices. Approximately 8 apple slices per serving.
- Enjoy!
