Around this time of year, holiday party planning is in full swing. Wherever you look, you'll find a holiday party setup that's full of bling and fancy napkins. I love those set ups— I just did one for Thanksgiving! However, this year, I've decided to take a more low-key, casual approach to the holiday season. Instead of a grand affair with attention to every detail, I'm taking a step back and letting others do some of the work. My intention is to put more focus on my family, rather than me being stuck in the kitchen for hours on end. Here's how I plan to do it.
Make it a Potluck
Instead of doing it all myself, I'm taking the traditional southern route, and making my holiday party a potluck. For those of you who might not be familiar with this idea, everyone brings a little something, and then we all stuff our faces. It's a great way to have a big spread of yummy food without anyone losing their minds.
As the host, I'll be making a few different things, but the dessert/snack item that I'm most excited about is NILLA Jamwiches made from Nabisco Nilla Wafers. I love this recipe because it's super easy (literally takes minutes to prepare!) and my daughter can help. These NILLA Jamwiches remind of a popular sweet in the UK, made from shortbread and raspberry jam filling— this version is even better with the added dip of milk chocolate!
Nilla Jamwiches Recipe

- 24 NILLA Wafers
- 2 Tbsp. raspberry jam
- 1/4 cup chocolate spread
- 1 Tbsp. multi-colored sprinkles
-
Spread flat sides of 12 wafers with jam. Use the other 12 wafers to make sandwiches.
-
Microwave chocolate spread in microwavable bowl on high for 25 to 30 seconds.
-
Dip sandwiches halfway into melted chocolate and place on wax paper-covered baking sheet. Top with sprinkles.
-
Refrigerate 30 minutes or until chocolate coating is firm.
Keep it Simple
It's a potluck so the holiday party is set around a variety of yummy foods and beverages. The food should be front and center. I will set all the platters on my dining room table and let everyone serve themselves buffet style. I'll keep the tablescape, if you can even call it that, simple with a just a holiday tablecloth and a few scattered candles. The goal is to make everyone feel at home.
Keep the Dress Code Casual
I'm the host, so I'll be attending my holiday party in jeans and a nice top, but I'm informing my guests that the dress code is whatever makes them comfy— No need to dress up!
The Most Laid Back Holiday Part Ever
I'm excited about my holiday party plans, and the people I've already told about it are, too. It's going to be all about family, friends, food, and love. What could be better? And when I bust out my NILLA Jamwiches, I know everyone's going to gobble them up ... I mean, how can they not? They're made with Nilla Wafers!
