So I guess the new buzz of the week is about Mattel's new Totally Stylin' Tattoos Barbie.
How there is even a controversy over this, I don't know. Don't people have better things to complain about?
The new tattoo Barbie comes with basically a bunch of tiny whimsical stickers (think butterflies, hearts, and flowers) that lets little girls place them where they wish and voila...Barbie now has tattoos.
Ok, is this news to me or something, but haven't little girls been placing stickers on their Barbies from like day 1? I know I did. I turned out just fine, and guess what? No tattoos here- not that I didn't want one at one time, but I could hardly blame Barbie for even considering it.
I am seriously baffled at the outrage.
In fact I have always been a Barbie lover. I played with them for way too long and now my daughter is a Barbie lover at age 4.
You know, I distinctly remember taking my dolls clothes and wading them up into a ball and placing them under Barbie's dresses to make her look pregnant. It wasn't until years later that Pregnant Midge came out and at the time I thought "wow, that's a great idea!" I could of really used her growing up...then a firestorm ensued and poor pregnant Midge was pulled from the shelves. I really hope tattoo Barbie doesn't see the same fate, because its just ridiculous.
I don't see how anyone could say that this sends some kind of negative message to young girls that they couldn't see anywhere else. In fact, I honestly believe girls who play with Barbies have a much better chance of being successful than those who do not. Instead of running around the neighborhood as a child, I was inside playing will my dolls. Couldn't get into too much trouble in there.
So, the moral of this story...leave Barbie alone and start complaining about things that really matter...like whats going on with the CPSIA?
P and I are off to Walmart tomorrow to get our hands on Tattoo Barbie before she is gone for good.
oh and PS, if you don't like something, you don't have to buy it.

Not a huge Barbie fan here - but I thought the idea of pregnant Midge was great, personally.

We are too young to be into Barbie, but I suppose I can see both sides of the issue. I agree re the CPSIA.

I love your "PS," Stefanie. I agree. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Totally Tattoo Barbie is at the top of my daughter's wishlist right now.
And what about the flip side: What message are we sending our daughters if we tell them they can't have that particular Barbie? Tattoos are very prevalent in our society today, so wouldn't we be communicating that they are somehow wrong or dirty? Not a message I want to send,
