Wireless vs. Traditional Home Security Options

As a home or business owner who wishes to install a security system, you have to choose from a traditional wired security system and the newer wireless systems. Both home security and office security are priorities in the present day, especially with the rising home invasion rate. Before deciding on a system, here are the things to consider.

Traditional Wired Security systems

These are the kind of hard-wired systems with security cameras and orร‚ย CCTV camerasร‚ย and sensors which are installed at different points of the house.ร‚ย They have a lot of wires and need to be installed by a technician. The sensors are usually connected to the home phone. These are cheaper than wireless systems and usually provide reliable service.

Due to their use of the land line for signaling the remote central system, wired systems do not work when the phone line is cut by criminals. Also during a black out, if the battery fails, the wired system will fail.

Wireless Security Systems

Here, the sensors communicate with the control panel wirelessly. Also, a cellular phone is the communication link between the alarm system and the remote central monitoring system. The cellphone signal is reliable and tamper-proof since the burglar cannot just cut a wire and disarm the system. Some companies include a land phone or broadband as a back-up communication channel. There are several additional features which can be installed with a wireless system like smoke sensors, carbon monoxide sensors, leak/flood sensors etc. The wireless security cameras can also send live video feed to your smartphone which is a recent innovation.

Wireless will be less invasive and easier to dismantle. But the lithium batteries of the wireless system have to be monitored constantly and kept at full strength for optimum performance. For larger houses or businesses, wireless security systems offer better coverage because of a longer range. Sensors can be linked to cover larger areas without needing drilling and installation.

Which Should You Choose?

If your home or office is under construction or being remodeled, a wired security system can be added to the blueprints easily. Once it is in place, it rarely needs to be replaced and is mostly maintenance-free. Even if something is faulty, it can easily be replaced since spare parts are easier to obtain. Wireless technology is constantly growing and updating, so you might find your technology outdated sooner.

If you are renting or planning to move soon, wireless security is the right choice. You will not be able to take your security system with you as it will be much too expensive dismantling everything and paying for repairs to the house. The wireless system is easy to install and is easy to move to a new location.

If you have a relatively old house, it will be difficult to install a wired system because of all the interior and exterior wiring involved. Also, a wired system can easily be sabotaged by a burglar simply by cutting a wire. Taking this into consideration, a wireless system may be the better home security choice even though it is more expensive.
