Carolina Beach is the perfect destination for a fall getaway. Fall means family-friendly festivals and events. It's always play time. The autumn is special in Carolina Beach where events and activities happen nonstop. There's a lot to do and an added bonus of uncrowded beaches. Carolina Beach is a popular summertime destination, but in the fall, with its special rates on accommodations, it delivers exceptional value.
Events take center stage on Oct. 9 and 10 at the Pleasure Island Seafood, Blues & Jazz Festival at Fort Fisher. Music lovers can soak up two days of non-stop jazz and blues performed on two stages by nationally- and regionally-recognized musicians. This year's headliner is Leon Russell. Seafood lovers can enjoy scrumptious seafood from some of the area's best restaurants. There's also shopping at booths hosted by crafters and local shop owners, a fine arts plaza and a wine tasting. For the kids, there is a special Kidz Zone with inflatable amusements, face painters and much more.
Some of the other highlights of the season include the Pleasure Island Surf Fishing Challenge on Oct. 15, 16, and 17. This fun competition is awarding over $12,000 in cash and prizes. On Oct. 27 and 28, take the kiddies to the North Carolina Aquarium's Trick or Treat Under the Sea for some unique Halloween fun.
There's lots of ways to relax and have some traditional family fun. Stroll hand-in-hand along the shore or on the boardwalk. Leave your cares behind and have a picnic, hike along the nature trails and do a little bird watching, or rent a paddleboat at Carolina Beach Lake Park. If you love to fish, grab a pole and join a fishing excursion. Several charter fishing boats are available for rental at the Carolina Beach Fishing Center and Marina. Drop a line off the pier or try your hand at surf fishing. Rent a canoe or kayak and paddle your cares away. Take a ride through town on a surrey bike. Outdoor adventure is all around.
Sharing the barrier island of Pleasure Island with Carolina Beach is Kure Beach, which offers more sites to see. Vacationers can explore the Fort Fisher State Historic Site & Civil War Museum, which is home to the largest earthen fort in the South. History buffs will also want to visit the North Carolina Military History Museum, which has a variety of exhibits encompassing all branches of the military.
Spend some time looking under the sea at the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher. It features a 235,000 gallon saltwater shark tank; the half-acre Cape Fear Conservatory with alligators, sturgeon and other freshwater species; and the Open Oceans Gallery that focuses on marine creatures and the nearby ocean reefs.
While staying in Carolina Beach, venture out to nearby Wilmington and enjoy its historic charm. Walk along the waterfront, take in the sights and historic homes on a carriage tour, or even take part in a ghost walk.
