Almond Joy Hot Cocoa Bombs
What Kind of Chocolate Can You Use to Make Hot Cocoa Bombs?
I love chocolate chips for cookies, but for hot cocoa bombs, I like to use melting chocolates because they just melt more smoothly, they stay smooth longer and I find that they don't seize up as easily.
Plus, if you want colorful hot chocolate bombs, candy melts also come pre-colored, so you won't need to color the chocolate.
What Do You Put Inside Hot Cocoa Bombs?
Being a semi-traditionalist, I usually just stick with hot cocoa mix (for the added sweet) and, of course, marshmallows. For this recipe, I added some shredded coconut and almond slivers to get that unique Almond Joy candy flavor. If you plan to toss a candy in there or even sprinkles, make sure they melt easily, have something to add (no sense in throwing something in there for no reason) and compliment the flavor of the chocolate. Otherwise, why bother?!
How Many Marshmallows Do You Put Inside Hot Cocoa Bombs?
I like to put as many marshmallows inside a hot cocoa bomb as I can fit, particularly if I think the kids will be the ones drinking them. Marshmallows generally melt in your hot cocoa, so I like to put more than you might initially think. I try to get somewhere between 5-8 marshmallows inside my hot cocoa bombs, but if you want more, it's all on you!
What You Need to Make Almond Joy Hot Cocoa Bombs
- 2 cups Chocolate Candy Melts
- 2 cups Hot Chocolate Mix
- 3 cups Mini Marshmallows
- ¼ cup Almond Slivers
- ½ cup Shredded Coconut
How to Make Almond Joy Hot Cocoa Bombs
- Place chocolate candy melts in a microwave safe bowl and melt in the microwave per the directions on the package.
- Place 1 tablespoon melted candy melt into one half of a bomb mold and, using the bottom of your tablespoon measuring spoon, press the chocolate up the sides of the mold, keeping it thick but even. Repeat with 12 bomb mold halves.
- Place the chocolate filled bomb molds into the freezer for 5 minutes.
- Remove molds from the freezer and gently tap the sides of the mold, pressing on one side of the chocolate to make the chocolate slid out of the mold.
- Fill 6 of the molds with 2 tablespoon hot chocolate mix, 1 tablespoon shredded coconut, a few almond slivers and 6-8 mini marshmallows.
- Heat a plate or a flat-bottom bowl in the microwave until the surface of the plate is warm to the touch.
- Press one of the empty chocolate bomb halves open-side-down onto the flat portion of the warm plate for about 10 seconds. This will gently melt the rim of the chocolate cup.
- Immediately press this warmed edge chocolate cup to the top of one of the filled cups. This will join the two halves of the hot cocoa bomb. If desired, add more of the chocolate melts to help shore-up that joint.
- Using a piping bag or a fork, drizzle the remaining candy melts over the assembled hot cocoa bombs then immediately follow by adding a few almond slivers on top.
- Place the hot cocoa bombs into the freezer for 5 minutes to get them to set, then remove and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use.
- To use the hot cocoa bombs, place them in a mug and pour 2 cups hot milk over the top. Stir until the hot cocoa bombs are completely melted and enjoy!
So easy, right?! Literally 10 minutes of effort and you're ready to gift your DIY hot cocoa bombs. If you're not quite ready to break out the candy melts though, don't panic. Just pin this to your favorite winter recipes board on Pinterest so you can find it again quick when you're ready!
