Mounds Hot Cocoa Bombs
What Kind of Chocolate Can You Use to Make Hot Cocoa Bombs?
Although I love chocolate chips, when I'm making hot cocoa bombs, I prefer to use melting chocolates. They just melt more smoothly, have a tendency to stay melted longer (meaning you have longer to work with them) and they don't seize up nearly as easily as typical chocolate chips.
Plus, if you're wanting colorful hot cocoa bombs, candy melts come pre-colored, so you don’t need to deal with coloring the chocolate and all the mess that entails.
What Do You Put Inside Hot Cocoa Bombs?
I try to stick with hot cocoa mix (for the added sweetness because chocolate by itself just doesn't quite get me there) and, of course, a handful of marshmallows. In this particular recipe, I added coconut for that uniquely Mounds candy flavor. If you're planning to toss a bit of candy in there or even add some sprinkles, make sure they can melt easily, they add a little something to the cocoa (no sense in throwing something in there for no reason) and compliment the chocolate flavor. Otherwise, why bother?!
How Many Marshmallows Do You Put Inside Hot Cocoa Bombs?
I generally like to answer this question with: as many as I can fit. Especially if I think the kids might be enjoying my DIY hot cocoa bombs. Marshmallows have a tendency to melt in the hot cocoa, so, even if it's just for me, I always like to err on more marshmallow. I generally can fit at least 5-8 mini-marshmallows in the hot cocoa bombs, but if you want more, it's all on you!
What You Need to Make Mounds Hot Cocoa Bombs
- 2 cups Chocolate Candy Melts
- 2 cups Hot Chocolate Mix
- 3 cups Mini Marshmallows
- ½ cup Shredded Coconut
How to Make Mounds Hot Cocoa Bombs
- Place chocolate candy melts in a microwave safe bowl and melt in the microwave per the directions on the package.
- Place 1 tablespoon melted candy melt into one half of a bomb mold and, using the bottom of your tablespoon measuring spoon, press the chocolate up the sides of the mold, keeping it thick but even. Repeat with 12 bomb mold halves.
- Place the chocolate filled bomb molds into the freezer for 5 minutes.
- Remove molds from the freezer and gently tap the sides of the mold, pressing on one side of the chocolate to make the chocolate slide out of the mold.
- Fill 6 of the molds with 2 tablespoon hot chocolate mix, 1 tablespoon shredded coconut, and 6-8 mini marshmallows.
- Heat a plate or a flat-bottom bowl in the microwave until the surface of the plate is warm to the touch.
- Press one of the empty chocolate bomb halves open-side-down onto the flat portion of the warm plate for about 10 seconds. This will gently melt the rim of the chocolate cup.
- Immediately press this warmed edge chocolate cup to the top of one of the filled cups. This will join the two halves of the hot cocoa bomb. If desired, add more of the chocolate melts to help shore-up that joint.
- Using a piping bag or a fork, drizzle the remaining candy melts over the assembled hot cocoa bombs then immediately follow by adding a few pinches of coconut shreds and a dusting of hot cocoa mix on top.
- Place the hot cocoa bombs into the freezer for 5 minutes to get them to set, then remove and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use.
- To use the hot cocoa bombs, place them in a mug and pour 2 cups hot milk over the top. Stir until the hot cocoa bombs are completely melted and enjoy!
