Christmas Hot Cocoa Bombs
What Kind of Chocolate Can You Use to Make Hot Cocoa Bombs?
I like to use those pre-colored melting chocolates because not only do they melt more smoothly, but theystay that smooth longer so you can work with them for longer and they don't seem to seize up as fast as regular chocolate chips, which can quickly get unmanageable, if you're not careful.
Plus, it's so nice that candy melts come pre-colored, so you don’t have to deal with the mess of coloring the chocolate.
What Do You Put Inside Hot Cocoa Bombs?
I usually stick to hot cocoa mix (for the added sweetness) and, of course, fluffy fresh marshmallows. If you plan to toss a bit of candy inside or even sprinkles like what I did with this particular hot cocoa bomb recipe, make sure that they're the kind to melt easily and have something to add (no sense in tossing something in them for no reason). Otherwise, what's the point?!
How Many Marshmallows Do You Put Inside Hot Cocoa Bombs?
I like to put as many marshmallows as I can reasonably fit into my hot cocoa bombs, particularly if I think the kids will be enjoying them (or me - I love marshmallows!). Because marshmallows can melt in the hot cocoa, so I like to put more than you might initially think. I generally try to fit between 5-8 marshmallows in each of the hot cocoa bombs, but if you want more, give it a shot!
What You Need to Make Christmas Hot Cocoa Bombs
- 2 cups Dark Green Candy Melts
- ½ cups Red Candy Melts
- 2 cups Hot Chocolate Mix
- 2 cups Mini Marshmallows
- Gold Sparkle Writing Gel
- ½ cup Christmas Present Sprinkles
How to Make Christmas Hot Cocoa Bombs
- Place dark green candy melts in a microwave safe bowl and melt in the microwave per the directions on the package.
- Place 2 tablespoon melted candy melt into one half of a bomb mold and, using the bottom of your tablespoon measuring spoon, press the chocolate up the sides of the mold, keeping it thick but even. Repeat with 12 bomb mold halves.
- Place the chocolate filled bomb molds into the freezer for 5 minutes.
- Remove molds from the freezer and gently tap the sides of the mold, pressing on one side of the chocolate to make the chocolate slid out of the mold.
- Fill 6 of the molds with 2 tablespoon hot chocolate mix, 1 teaspoon sprinkles, and 6-8 mini marshmallows.
- Heat a plate or a flat-bottom bowl in the microwave until the surface of the plate is warm to the touch.
- Press one of the empty chocolate bomb halves open-side-down onto the flat portion of the warm plate for about 10 seconds. This will gently melt the rim of the chocolate cup.
- Immediately press this warmed edge chocolate cup to the top of one of the filled cups. This will join the two halves of the hot cocoa bomb.
- Place red candy melts in a microwave safe bowl and melt in the microwave per the directions on the package.
- Using a piping bag or a fork, drizzle the red candy melts and the sparkle gel over the assembled hot cocoa bombs then immediately follow by sprinkling with the Christmas sprinkles.
- Place the hot cocoa bombs into the freezer for 5 minutes to get them to set, then remove and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use.
- To use the hot cocoa bombs, place them in a mug and pour 2 cups hot milk over the top. Stir until the hot cocoa bombs are completely melted and enjoy!
And that's literally all there is to it! So fast, you can have a dozen made in about 20 minutes of effort, then pack them up for gifting! Oh, you're not ready to break out the sprinkles quite yet? No sweat!
