Creating the Perfect Outdoor Space: Mediterranean Themed Deck

Now that spring is here, I've been doing quite a bit of cleaning and decorating, including purchasing new items to spruce up my home. While I haven't committed to any major projects, I have been toying with the idea of getting a deck built on the side of our house. Having a deck would add value to the property, plus it would be great for lounging in the spring and summer. We already have a lanai, but since it's covered we don't get the sun an outdoor deck would provide.

There's a lot to think about when it comes to building a deck. First, there's the actually decking, then there's the railing and finally, the fencing. I have been sorting through the materials and samples, and believe me, it all adds up! Here's a look at the pricing:

Once I have this deck built (I'm dreaming here!), I want one of those outdoor wood fire burning ovens so I can make homemade pizza. Crazy? Yes! Here's what I'm talking about-- Wood Fire Oven Kit. I would also like a nice outdoor patio set from Sears (or someplace similar). Here's the style I like:

By the looks of it, I'm trying to make my own outdoor Italian oasis! And since I don't want to stop there, here are some more of my ideas for creating an outdoor space, reminiscent of the Mediterranean:

  • Adding potted lemon trees
  • Rich colored fabrics (reds, greens and golds) and cobalt blue glassware
  • Small water fountain feature
  • Strands of white lighting
  • Other greenery, including staked tomato plants and possibly a small garden with fresh herbs
  • Another grill, either charcoal or gas, for cooking marinated steaks and chicken/skewered vegetables
  • An outdoor sound system for music
  • Glass fruit bowls (with the look of Murano glass, but not the price!)

Seriously, this is my dream space and it all starts with the deck! Maybe I can convince my hubby to take on a DIY project ASAP!
