When searching and comparing different credit cards, you are likely to come across credit cards for bad credit. This category of credit cards can be a little confusing to get your head around, but they are quite simply products designed for people who have a poor credit rating.

So, if you have had applications for credit rejected time and time again, you may find that one of these ‘bad credit’ credit cards is the right option for you. There are a few things you can do first though, such as working out why you’ve been rejected in the first place. There could be a mistake on your credit file, you may have been the victim of identity fraud or you may simply have had a rocky credit history and need to take steps to rebuild your credit rating.

If all else fails, or if you need credit now and don’t have time to improve your credit rating, you can consider applying for a credit card that is designed for people with your credit profile.   These cards work by giving you access to a limited amount of credit, so that you will find it easier to pay off your balance each month and thereby build up a solid credit history. This can help you to gradually improve your credit rating for the future, whilst still having access to the credit you need today.

What you Need to Know

Before you run a credit card comparison and apply for one of these credit cards, you need to make sure you can afford the repayments in full every month. This is really important, as the interest rates on these kinds of cards can be really high. What’s more, if you don’t repay in full, your credit rating may not improve.

Another important thing to be aware of is that getting rejected for credit again can damage your score even more. This is why you should only apply for credit cards that you are likely to be accepted for. Some providers have online tools you can use to check your eligibility for certain products, or you can use tools from comparison services like MoneySupermarket to check which cards you are eligible for.

Lastly, you should know that if you are not accepted anywhere, there is a last resort you can try. The solution for many people with terrible credit histories is a prepaid credit card designed to help rebuild credit scores. These cards require you to load the card with money before spending and you may have to pay a monthly fee, but you are practically guaranteed to be accepted.
