Your child loves castles, and here's your chance to be a hero - make him or her a castle cake. It's not as hard as you might think. All you need is a large filled sponge cake, a small filled sponge cake, some buttercream, red food coloring, 9 chocolate mini-rolls, 9 ice cream cones, some chocolate sticks, a lot of rainbow sprinkles, lots of chocolate buttons, and dolly mixtures. You'll also need a wooden skewer.
Get The Video Camera Out
Before you get started, try shooting a video of yourself making it. Most people who make cool things for their kids forget about capturing the moment. This is something that could be added to a private YouTube account. When your child is all grown up he could download it, using software like that found on http://www.youtubedownloadersite.com/, to a mobile device as a keepsake.
Prep the Cakes
Spread a small amount of the buttercream frosting in the center of the larger cake. The frosting will act like a sort of "glue." Now, place the smaller cake on top of the larger one. Make sure it's centered on the larger one and that there's enough frosting to hold it in place.
Prepare The Butter Cream
Add some red food coloring to the rest of the buttercream. If you don't have, or don't like, red you can always substitute it for another color. Cover the whole cake in frosting using a palette knife. Make sure you get really good coverage.
Make The Towers
Now it's time for the towers. Every good castle has towers. That's how you defend the kind and queen. Place four chocolate mini-rolls at equal intervals around the base of the large cake. Place four more around the smaller cake. Now, place a single mini roll in the center of the smaller cake.
Finally, secure the last roll to the cake using a small wooden skewer through the center. and into the cake.
Make The Spires
Cover the ice cream cones in buttercream frosting. Now, sprinkle each cone with sprinkes. When you're done, rest each ice cream cone on top of a mini-roll. Does it look good yet?
Make The Door And Windows
Now for the doors and windows. Cut five chocolate sticks in half and take four of them and cut the top at an angle. Place the sticks on the side of the cake to make a door. Now, press chocolate buttons at regular intervals around the side of the cake for windows.
The dolly mixtures go around the base of the cake (the larger cake) - all the way around. You can also press another line around the base of the smaller cake.
You're basically done now, but you can add a little more flare if you want to by using figurines. Go out and get some smallish fairy figurines and place them around the outside of the castle. If this is a birthday cake, you can also add candles around the top of the cake. Vwala! Your child will be so surprised.
