The largest island in the Caribbean, Cuba blends the stunning architecture of Europe with the natural splendor of a gorgeous tropical setting. While the gently swaying palm trees, warm white sands and inviting waters are more than enough for a relaxing and enjoyable getaway, this island nation has even more to offer! All the more reason to make Cuba your holiday choice of 2013.
Stroll the Streets of Havana
Sensually gritty and endlessly charming, Cuba's enchanting capital city tells the story of a beautiful country that has remained vibrant through years of revolution and progress. Must-see stops include political landmarks such as Plaza de la Revolucion, Capitolio Nacional and Museo de la Revolucion. The Museo de la Cinudad has housed everything from the folklore and art of Cuba's first people to relics from the war for independence, making it another essential stop for any history buff.
Dinner and Dancing
Fusing Spanish heritage with the flair of Caribbean flavors, Cuban cuisine is the delicious result of blended cultures and traditions. Black beans, rice and plantains provide a strong foundation for delightful dishes that usually feature fresh fruits and either pork or fish. While fantastic restaurants can be found in Havana and throughout the rest of the country, the "paladares" -- private restaurants that citizens run out of their homes -- offer the best authentic meals. Cuba's unique blend of Spanish and African influences have also resulted in energetic and exciting rhythms that call to everyone's inner dancer: With performances of salsa, rumba and mambo occurring both in clubs and in the streets, locals and tourists alike often find themselves on their feet in celebration of this fantastic culture.
Have a Drink for Hemingway
Travelers from around the world have walked -- or, in this case, crawled -- in the shoes of a master by visiting the favorite Havana pubs of literary genius Ernest Hemingway. A day in the life of Hemingway included indulging in daiquiris at El Floridita followed by some of the famed mojitos of La Bodeguita del Medio; most nights ended in his suite at the Hotel Ambos Mundos. Fans will be delighted to find that Hemingway's original bar stools and hotel suite have been preserved.
Visit Che's Mausoleum
Complete with a thorough museum and a 6.7 meter statue, the Che Guevara Mausoleum is the resting place of Marxist revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara and 29 of his followers. Che's remains came to the mausoleum in 1997 after they were discovered in Bolivia, where he was killed in an uprising 30 years prior. Located in Santa Clara in remembrance of a pivotal point in the Cuban Revolution, the Che Guevara Mausoleum provides a glimpse into Cuba's incredible history.
Have a Cigar
Globally recognized for its fine cigars, Cuba produces some of the most desirable tobacco in the world. Three popular suppliers of these perfectly rolled temptations -- Romeo y Julieta, Partagas and La Corona -- are located in the heart of Havana, offering tours that will captivate even the most adamant non-smokers. Visitors can watch the workers transform ugly dried tobacco leaves into delicious luxury items and can even leave with a case of little treasures!
