Every year at Christmas I look forward to digging into my Christmas stocking for those delicious orange chocolates. Since I was a kid this has been one of my favorite traditions. This year I am taking those magical memories and making a new holiday tradition - Orange Slice Candy Hot Cocoa Bombs.
Orange Slice Hot Cocoa Bombs
What Kind of Chocolate Can You Use to Make Hot Cocoa Bombs?
Chocolate can be a bit tricky to work with, however I do have one trick that will simplify the process of making homemade hot cocoa bombs.
That secret? Candy melts.
I like to use melting chocolates because they are designed to do this kind of work. They melt smoother and stay workable for longer. Plus they’re less prone to seizing up if they get a little hot by accident. Not to say they won't’ seize, but they’re less prone to doing so.
I tried making hot cocoa bombs with regular chocolate chips and while you CAN do it, they get very unmanageable fast. The chocolate is more liable to crack coming out of the mold and it’s just not worth it.
Candy melts are also pre-colored, so you don’t have to worry about the chocolate seizing up as you color it - it’s just better to go with candy melts.
What Do You Put Inside Hot Cocoa Bombs?
There’s no scientific equation as to what you have to put inside a hot cocoa bombs. However, there are some rules I like to follow, just to make your experience as magical as possible.
If you’re using a candy or other non-marshmallow stuffing, you need to think about including something that’s going to:
- Add flavor
- Melt
- Compliment the Chocolate
What do I mean by this? Well, if you just put something inside that doesn’t add flavor, what’s the point?! Seems like a waste. Sprinkles are fun, but that’s part of the magic when the hot cocoa bombs explode and you get to see the sprinkles swirling around with the marshmallows.
Make sure your hot cocoa bomb stuffing is prone to melting because you're drinking this. I don’t know about you but I haven’t mastered the skill of being able to drink and chew at the same time, and choking just isn’t something we want to happen.
And finally, make sure the secondary flavor you choose goes well with chocolate, because you don’t want a gross tasting cup of hot cocoa.
How Many Marshmallows Do You Put Inside Hot Cocoa Bombs?
Stuff that hot cocoa bomb full. The marshmallows are going to melt in the hot cocoa, so you can put more than I did. I did somewhere between 5-8, so plenty, but if you want more, stuff that hot cocoa bomb full!

How to Make Orange Slice Hot Cocoa Bombs
- Place orange candy melts in a microwave safe bowl and melt in the microwave per the directions on the package.

- Place the chocolate filled bomb molds into the freezer for 5 minutes.
- Remove molds from the freezer and gently tap the sides of the mold, pressing on one side of the chocolate to make the chocolate slide out of the mold.
- Fill 6 of the molds with 1 tablespoon hot chocolate mix, 1 orange candy slice, and 6-8 mini marshmallows.
- Heat a plate or a flat-bottom bowl in the microwave until the surface of the plate is warm to the touch.
- Press one of the empty chocolate bomb halves open-side-down onto the flat portion of the warm plate for about 10 seconds. This will gently melt the rim of the chocolate cup.
- Immediately press this warmed edge chocolate cup to the top of one of the filled cups. This will join the two halves of the hot cocoa bomb.
- Using a piping bag or a fork, drizzle the remaining candy melts over the assembled hot cocoa bombs then immediately follow by pressing an orange chocolate slice on top of them.
- Place the hot cocoa bombs into the freezer for 5 minutes to get them to set, then remove and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use.
