I'm no stranger to the Tinker Bell movies. Having a young daughter who adores fairies will open you to a world full of pixie dust. As I type this, she's in the next room gluing fairy wings on all of her Littlest Pet Shop pets... I remember a few years ago, when the first Tinkerbell movie debuted-- we were both super excited that Tinker Bell was finally getting her chance to shine. It's hard to believe that we're now onto the fourth Tinker Bell movie, Secret of the Wings.
If you've been following the Tinkerbell films, this installment is played out in winter -- For reference, Tinker Bell was set in spring, Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure was set in fall, and Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue was set in summer. In Secret of the Wings, we learn that winter is not really a season, but a place-- completely separate from Pixie Hollow. The Winter Woods, where it stays winter year-round, is a world completely detached from Tinker Bell and her friends, and they are forbidden to go there because it's simply too cold for their wings, which can't be repaired if broken. Tinker Bell just knows that there's something drawing her into the Winter Woods, and she's determined to find out why her wings sparkled the day she helped Fawn bring the animals to the border for hibernation. Of course, we know going in that it's actually Tinker Bell's sister, Periwinkle, who lives in the Winter Woods, and when they finally meet, both their worlds change forever.
Secret of the Wings is probably my favorite of the Tinker Bell movies because we get to meet Periwinkle, who is just adorable. If I didn't know that Tinker Bell's sister was being introduced in this film, I would never have believed it. We've known Tinker Bell all this time and we've never imagined her to have a sibling, but in this film it totally works and the bond between them is immediate. Both children and adults will find something enjoyable in Secret of the Wings. There are new male characters, as well as a love story element that will melt your heart 😉 Secret of the Wings is cute and fun, and a must see for fans of Tinker Bell and the Disney Fairies.
Interview with Director Peggy Holmes
After screening Secret of the Wings at Disney Toon Studios, I had the chance to interview the film's director, Peggy Holmes. It was really cool getting the behind the scenes scoop on what goes in to making the Tinker Bell movies. The research involved is beyond what you would imagine for an animated film, which is largely due to John Lasseter ... who just happened to stop by and say Hi to us before seeing the film. SQUEE!
Here's some of the Q & A from the interview:
Can you tell us how you picked the names? Especially Periwinkle.
PEGGY: I sort of looked at winter photography and I noticed there were so many awesome looking whites and blues. And one of the things we wanted to focus on in the movie is that this can’t feel like a Christmas place, it’s not a season winter. So, we decided to research all the different shades of blue and find the names out of that. So Periwinkle became Periwinkle and Lord Milori … Milori is a shade of blue!
Tell me a little bit about the process of introducing Tinker Bell’s sister, since we’ve all known about Tinker Bell, she’s the iconic character.
PEGGY: When we originally created Periwinkle it was not Tink’s sister … but it just wasn’t having as much emotional impact. Clay Hall who directed Lost Treasure actually said why don’t we just make it her sister. So then we started the process of what does that mean in this world. What is that. So that was a fun creative process and, you know we came upon this idea that oh my gosh there were two little wisps, we just didn’t see it in the first movie.
What's the future for Periwinkle?
PEGGY: In terms of the future, we will continue to tell Tinker Bell’s stories. And if it makes sense for Periwinkle to be in that adventure with Tinker Bell she will be there.
Disney Secret of the Wings will be available on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray & DVD Combo Pack, DVD, and HD Digital October 23.
Special thanks to Walt Disney Pictures for providing me the opportunity to preview Secret of the Wings at Disney Toon Studios. All opinions are my own.

I had NO idea Milori was a shade of blue. That's so cool how they came up with those names. And I really love the idea of what a sister is in this fairy world.

My daughter loves these movies! I’m really looking forward to watching this one, and a friend and co-worker at DISH suggested that I add it to my Blockbuster@Home rental queue. By using Blockbuster I’ve found that by paying a flat monthly fee to rent movies I save a ton of money in the long run. I wish I had the money to just go out and buy it for her, but sadly I need my money for other things.
Kathleen
