Tips for Beating Acne

Acne is a skin condition that affects roughly 80 percent of teenagers. The fact that acne is so common does not make it any easier for a teen to cope. This condition can be physically and emotionally scarring, but fortunately, there are things mothers can do to help their teens overcome their acne. Below are some tips that can help teens beat acne.

Encourage your teens to wash their skin every morning and every night

Bacteria is the root cause of acne. Cleansing the skin is one of the most effective things that can be done to remove bacteria as well as dirt and oil. The face should be washed every morning and every night. However, it is important to note that over washing the skin can lead to dryness. That is why teens should not wash their face more than twice a day. It is also important to make sure that one uses mild soaps and cleaners.

Buy over-the-counter acne products that contain benzoyl peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most effective acne-fighting ingredients. It helps remove dead skin cells and excessive oil. Benzoyl perioxide is available in 2.5 to 10 percent strengths. Even though benzoyl peroxide is extremely effective, people need to make sure that they are extremely cautious when they are using this product. Benzoyl peroxide can bleach the hair and the clothes. It can also cause skin redness and irritation.

Seek the help of a dermatologist

Mothers may also want to consider taking their teens to a dermatologist. A dermatologist is a medical doctor who has received extra training in skin care. Dermatologists usually prescribe medications to treat acne. Antibiotics, which are a class of medications that help kill bacteria, are one of the most commonly prescribed acne medications. Female patients may also be prescribed oral contraceptives. Laser light therapy, microdermabrasion and chemical peels are some of the other acne treatments available. These treatments are also very effective for removing acne scars.

It is important to note that a trip to the dermatologist can be quite costly. However, health insurance can offset some of the cost. Additionally, mothers may also want to consider getting a referral from their teen’s primary care doctor.

Washing the face and using benzoyl peroxide-containing products are two simple things that teens can do to beat acne. If those acne treatments fail, mothers should take their teenagers to the dermatologist.
