If I had my way, I wouldn't be aging at all— but I am. And like millions of women around the world, I want to be able to grow older as gracefully as possible, with young-ish looking, glowing and healthy skin. But, because there are hundreds of thousands of anti-aging products on the market, including so-called ‘miracle’ treatments, how do you know which products are best for your skin?
As much as I wish there was, there isn't a cream in existence (yet!) that can cater to every woman's anti-aging needs. Because our skin is very different and we have different needs depending on our age, lifestyle or season. So, from one beauty addict to another, here are the tips I've gleamed from many years of experimenting with different products and brands.
Rule One: Always Wash Your Skin Before Bed
Most of us wash our faces in the morning before applying other products, such as day moisturizer, but forgetting to wash your face in the evening can lead to congestion, spots and other skin issues that can make your skin appear older and unhealthy. Invest in a good cleanser, toner and anti-wrinkle eye cream and perform your skin routine religiously each night – you will see a difference.
Rule Two: Listen to Your Skin
One of the worst things I ever did was buy beauty products because they were popular and expensive. If a product is popular and expensive, then that must mean that it works, right? Well, sadly, not always. I have incredibly, incredibly dry skin, especially during the winter months, and I often have to reapply moisturizer throughout the day in order to keep my skin looking somewhat human.
If you have dry skin, look for products that cater to dry skin types — not normal or sensitive skin types — as these products will not work as well for you. If you’re looking for a dry skin treatment with some decent coverage, then consider a tinted moisturizer or BB cream instead of foundation. Foundation isn't always the best for dry skin and can leave you looking like you’re caked in makeup.
Rule Three: Wear Sunscreen Every Day
When I say “Every day”, I mean it! One of the worst offenders for aging skin is the sun, and even on cloudy days the sun’s rays can still get through the cloud and cause invisible damage to your skin. Wear products that have at least an SPF 15 for protection, which many modern skin creams have as standard. If you’d rather wear a separate sunscreen, this is also acceptable. Remember, sunscreen will prevent sun damage to your skin, and help create a barrier between your skin and all those nasty UVA and UVB rays.
Remember, get the basics right, and you will be doing wonders for your skin!
