New York City is one of my favorite places in the US. I just love the hustle and bustle, energy and excitement that I feel the moment I step off the plane. I don't think there is anywhere else on earth where you can feel so alive.
Having only traveled there three times within the last two years, I am not one to give advice on how to get around the city or give specifics on where to eat. I can only share my favorite things that I have personally experienced. I am positive true New Yorkers will balk at my "tourist trap" suggestions of must-dos in New York City-- but I think that's part of why NYC is so much fun.
Here's a few of my favorite touristy things to do in New York City:
Check out Times Square
I'm pretty sure this is a no-brainer; There's no place like Times Square. The crowds. The billboards. The lights. It's just about insanity any time of day.
I mean where else can you see the Naked Cowboy?
Statue of Liberty
For most tourists, NYC is all about sightseeing: The Empire State Building, Central Park, Rockefeller Center, and my personal favorite, The Statue of Liberty. It wasn't until my third visit to NYC that I finally got around to seeing this beautiful monument. I recommend taking the 75-minute Liberty Cruise from Circle-Line Sightseeing.
Eat a slice of pizza
One of my favorite things to do in NYC is eat. From the Shake Shack to street food, it's all good to me. If there is one thing you must try, it's a slice of New York style pizza. The good news is that it's easy to find and cheap. I'm still searching for the best slice of New York pie. Any suggestions?
See a show on Broadway
I really, really heart Broadway. I can't think of a better night out in NYC than dinner and a show. On my last visit I got the opportunity to see The Addams Family with Nathan Lane & Bebe Neuwirth (who are no longer playing the roles of Gomez and Morticia Addams). I really don't think it matters what show you see on Broadway, as long as you catch one. TIP: Look for the TKTS Booth in Times Square for discount day-of-performance tickets.
So there's my short list of must-dos for first-timers in New York City. If you've never been, you really must get out there; there's always deals on flights to New York via Cheapflights.co.uk.
