This weekend we celebrated my daughter's 5th birthday with a luau party!
I am not sure I was thinking clearly when I decided I would have the party at our house vs. somewhere else. I think the thought process was that if it is held at the house it would somehow be less expensive....wrong!
This was also the first birthday where my daughter had actual kid friends to invite from preschool. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) only 5 kids attended the party vs. the 20 or so invitations that we handed out. By the way, the invitations were from www.tinyprints.com and were absolutely adorable. I got SO many compliments on them...highly recommended for their excellent service.
The party was supposed to be a slip 'n slide/sprinkler party in addition to some games and food. I think I have the worst luck ever with rain and parties as this was the second year in a row that our outdoor event got rained on.
The kids were majorly disappointed, but for some reason, the moms didn't seem to mind.
Instead, the kids ransacked the house for every toy my daughter owned and pretty much trashed the place. I spent a week cleaning and in a matter of minutes, it was a disaster area. I didn't mind too much at the time because it was raining outside and the kids needed something to do...
My husband grilled up some hot dogs and we had some delicious cupcakes (from Publix) before the kids whacked up the pinata, and my daughter opened her presents.
After about 2 hours it had stopped raining for a brief moment and we let the kids go outside for the slip 'n slide. They had a blast! It was only about 15 minutes before the rain started up again and everyone got ready to go home.
I had been planning this party for over a month, and it was done in just over 2 hours...it also cost more than double what I budgeted. I actually enjoyed myself and it was nice to sit down and chat with some other moms who oddly enough I had never met before this day. I really hope to get together with some of them this summer as the kids are not all going to the same kindergarten next year.
In the end, it was all worth is as my daughter declared this the best birthday ever.
Happy 5th Birthday Princess!
