Living in Florida, I find myself traveling through Miami International Airport several times a year. I actually love layovers at MIA because it usually means I'm traveling out of the U.S. to visit either Mexico, the Caribbean or Europe -- which is never a bad thing! Plus, they have the best airport food 😉
On all my layovers at Miami International Airport I never stopped to think how many people go through there, or what kind of challenges airport security face on a day-to-day basis. As an international hub, MIA is listed as a Category X airport -- which means it's at the highest risk for terrorist attack. With all the people coming and going (38 million passengers a year!), there are bound to be some incredible behind the scenes stories.
A new show on the Travel Channel -- Airport 24/7 -- takes viewers behind close doors at Miami International Airport to see what really happens when things don't go as planned. From crazy passengers, flight delays, emergencies and criminals smuggling in a variety of illegal plants and animals (love the Beagle brigade!) -- there's always something going on.
I caught my first episode of Airport 24/7 last week and I thought it was very entertaining. In addition to all the drama airport staff and security face, there's also room for them to do some good. On the episode I viewed, the Director of Terminal Operations helped a girl with a medical issue by helping her change her flight at the very last minute. Here's a preview of another good deed by airport staff at MIA:
What I enjoyed most about Airport 24/7 was seeing just how committed airport staff are to keeping passengers safe, and how they really do care about our needs when unexpected issues arise.
