This post is brought to you by Amwell. All opinions are my own.
Just a few days before I left for Germany, I began to feel a tickle in my throat. I let it go a day thinking it would clear up on it's own, but instead I found myself with a cough and stuffy nose on a Friday afternoon — the absolute worst day for getting a doctor's appointment. I made an attempt nonetheless, and was turned away until the next week, when I would already be in Munich for Thanksgiving with my family. My doctor's office actually suggested to go into a walk-in clinic, which is a minimum of $125 for a visit. I wasn't super sick, but because I was traveling out of the country I wanted to talk to a doctor and possibly get a prescription in case my symptoms progressed.
My husband had just used Amwell a week earlier for his own minor illness and suggested I do the same. And in that instant, I felt dumb for not thinking of Amwell before wasting my time trying to get a doctor's appointment with my primary.
If you haven't heard of or tried Amwell, I am here to tell you it's a game-changer for the healthcare industry. I love my primary care doctor, I really do, but it's ridiculous how long it can take to get an appointment. There are times, like before I left for Germany, where I just need to talk to a medical professional and, at most, get a prescription *just in case*. Walk-in Clinics are pricey even for those who are insured— Amwell is the solution for talking to a doctor online, anytime for just $49 (or less, if your insurance is accepted).
I already had an account with Amwell, so seeing a doctor was as easy as logging in and listing my symptoms. For first time users, you'll need to create a free account and note any existing health conditions and medications you are taking so it will be always on file. This only takes a few minutes! Before every Amwell session the doctor will look over your information to make sure you're getting the best care possible.
I needed to see a primary care physician on my most recent virtual visit, but Amwell also employs specialist physicians, licensed behavioral therapists and registered dietitians to meet patients’ health and wellness needs.
My doctor was Dr. Cameron McCoin, a primary care physician who has practiced family medicine and urgent care for more than twenty years. I went over my symptoms, which were sore throat, cough, and chest congestion, and explained that I was leaving for Europe in 2 days and was afraid it was going to get worse— traveling can take a toll on the immune system and I didn't want to risk needing medical care out of the country. She agreed that my symptoms seemed to indicate a cold, requiring no antibiotics — just rest and time — but since I was leaving it would be proactive to have a prescription for Amoxicillin if needed while away.
Dr. McCoin gave me some tips for battling my symptoms, including taking two hot showers a day to relieve my sinuses, and sent over a prescription to my preferred pharmacy. The whole session was over in 15 minutes and I couldn't have asked for a better experience, even from my own doctor.
