Holy moly. I can't believe that I'm a mom to a fifth grader ... a fifth grader!! It seems like just yesterday that my daughter was starting kindergarten, and now we're in our final year of elementary school.
And, oh how things have changed. I remember when I was in charge of all of the back to school clothes shopping— outfits were always perfectly matched, from the bows in her hair down to her socks. Now, I can't even suggest an outfit because it would automatically be deemed "uncool". My daughter has her own funky sense of style, which I secretly love. I think it's awesome that she knows what she likes and can express herself without even thinking twice about what everyone else is wearing.
This year we were invited to shop at JCPenney for some back to school must-haves. As usual, my kid completely took the reins on the whole shopping trip, picking out every single piece by herself. What can I say ... the girl loves to shop (just like her mama)!
It had been awhile since I had shopped in store at JCP and I was totally surprised at just how great the deals were in the girls department. Jeans for $19.99 (or less)? Tees for $6.99? Sketchers for $35? Check. Check. Check. I knew right away that our money would go far, but would the styles suit my picky daughter's taste?
I think she found a thing or two twelve that she liked 😉
Two of her top picks - a nerdy cat tank with a loose cardigan and an infinity scarf, and a donut graphic tee, which she thought was hilarious.
Apparently FROZEN is here to stay because she had to have this "Let It Go" shirt. She opted not to get the elephant outfit on the right because she thought it was too matchy-matchy — of course, I loved it.
Sketchers were on her must-have list for this school year — she was really into all the colors on this pair.
We walked out of JCPenney with three bags of stuff for school, including two pairs of shoes, new jeans, denim shorts, 2 scarfs and an array of tops to mix and match. I know my daughter was stoked with everything she got, and loved the fact that she picked it all out for herself. As much as I miss the days when I decided what my daughter would wear, I'm proud that she has her own distinct style and isn't afraid of self-expression.
