OnStar made a BIG announcement earlier this month at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Starting this summer, select 2015 Chevrolet vehicles will come equipped with OnStar 4G LTE. What’s 4G LTE? It’s high-speed wireless Internet through a Wi-Fi hotspot that’s built right into the vehicle … Yes, Wi-Fi in your car, truck or SUV!!
I can’t even tell you how excited I am about this announcement. I've been an OnStar customer for almost 9 years— and while I've only used the service a few times, it’s always on, giving me the peace of mind that I need when I’m on the road. Having a Wi-Fi connectivity in a vehicle really takes the OnStar service to the next level.
You might be thinking to yourself, “Why do I need a hotspot when I have a smartphone”. That’s a great question, and I happy to report that OnStar 4G LTE is far more than just Wi-Fi. Every Chevrolet with AppShop comes equipped with OnStar 4G LTE hardware with available data plans so you can use the in-dash screen to safely download useful apps. Instead of fumbling with your phone while you’re driving (not safe!!), you can get weather, diagnostic, news and travel updates with just a touch of a button.
OnStar 4G LTE would be most useful to me and my family on road trips. As you know, I love to travel, but I actually shy away from road trips because it puts me out of commission, work-wise, for hours on end. Having a Wi-Fi hotspot would allow me to use my laptop from the passenger’s seat, while my husband drives (Yay!). My daughter would be able to stream movies on Netflix, and play games that she would normally be limited to use at home, like Club Penguin. OnStar 4G LTE has the ability to connect with up to 7 devices, so everyone can use their own laptop or tablet-- can you imagine how much more enjoyable road trips will be?
I love that OnStar 4G LTE will go wherever I go, with the reliability of AT&T (GM’s carrier partner) and all of the other safety benefits of OnStar. Plus, the new system is equipped to grow with your family and the life of the vehicle with updates.
Here are some of the highlights from the announcement at CES.
