Have a real Christmas tree? Keep your home and family safe with these Christmas Tree Fire Safety Tips. This post is sponsored by BabbleBoxx.com on behalf of Erie Insurance.

With all of the excitement of the holidays, no one wants to think about things that could possibly go wrong.

Christmas trees and decorations are synonymous with this time of year, but if proper precautions arenรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt put in place, they could become a fire risk.

Christmas Tree Fire Safety Tips

To help keep your family and home safe during this joyful time of year, Iรขโ‚ฌโ„ขve partnered with Erie Insurance to bring you some fire safety tips so you can avoid a scary situation like this:

It only takes 30 seconds for a Christmas tree to go up in flames! – Click at the end of the video for even more ways to prevent Christmas tree fires.

Christmas Tree Fire Safety Tips

รขโ€ โ€™ Choose a live Christmas tree with fresh, bright green needles that do not shed when touched.

รขโ€ โ€™ Position your tree away from heat sources like fireplaces, candles, radiators, heat vents and even electronics such as the TV. Also, do not put your tree in front of an exit.

รขโ€ โ€™ Make sure your Christmas tree is properly secured in a tree stand for the correct tree height. This is especially important in homes that have children and pets.

รขโ€ โ€™ Keep water topped up at all times. Check and refill the tree stand daily.

รขโ€ โ€™ Only decorate with lights that are UL certified and undamaged. Donรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt overload extension cords with light strands (three should be the maximum) and keep the cords out of walkways.

รขโ€ โ€™ Use a timer or wi-fi enabled app where you can turn Christmas tree lights off and on, in case you forget when youรขโ‚ฌโ„ขre away. Never leave Christmas tree lights on while youรขโ‚ฌโ„ขre sleeping.

รขโ€ โ€™ Dispose of your Christmas tree right after the holiday is over. The longer the tree stays up, the drier the needles will get and be more susceptible to fire. Check with your local ordinance for disposal guidelines.

รขโ€ โ€™ Keep a fire extinguisher nearby, just in case.
