Today officially marked the last day of school for my daughter. While we're both super excited about all of the fun we have planned, in the back of my mind I'm already concerned about the transition she is going to have in the fall, going from elementary to middle school.
I remember sixth grade being a bear of a year for me. Not only do classes change, but the workload is considerably harder. Math is my daughter's biggest weakness, and if we don't stay on top of it, she is going to be seriously behind when August rolls around. Research shows students lose two to three months of grade level math equivalency over the summer, which impacts their readiness for the next school year.
But this summer I have a secret weapon: TenMarks, an Amazon company. And the best part is that it's completely free this summer!
The TenMarksSummer Math Program is a national program that provides students with a personalized course tuned to their individual learning needs, based on a summative end-of-year assessment. With the Program, parents can encourage students to use screen time in a productive way over the summer, whether at home or on-the-go.
From now until August 31, 2015, parents can sign up for a FREE TenMarks account for students at www.summer.tenmarks.com. There is also an app available for tablets on iOS, Android or Fire OS, and it is also free to use throughout the summer.
Data from 2014 showed that the TenMarksSummer Math Program helped reverse summer learning loss for over 69% of participating students—in just 8 weeks, with one-hour of use per week, students tested at the beginning of the program and then again at the end of the program averaged 11% increase in scores. Pretty amazing!
I signed my daughter for her free account last week (which was a breeze!), and she's already using the program on a nightly basis. After registration, each child selects the grade they will be going into and then takes an assessment test to gauge their skills. My little one scored lower than I expected on the assessment, which actually pleased me because I want her to be challenged -- I'm hoping that she learns to master the skills she needs to know for the year ahead.
So far, she seems to be really enjoying the TenMarks summer curriculum and sees it as fun and challenging. She's also excited for the opportunity to earn certificates and custom rewards as she goes through the program.
The TenMarks Summer Math Program is designed for students completing grade 1 through Geometry and Algebra 2, helping build their math foundation and skills over the summer break at their own pace and time, and benefiting teachers who typically spend the first few weeks of a school year re-introducing the previous years’ teachings.
The program starts with a diagnostic assessment it uses to automatically create a personalized summer curriculum, which reviews concepts from the previous year, and introduces concepts for the year ahead. As students work through their curriculum, they use embedded hints and video lessons to refresh what they know while learning new material. The program adapts with targeted interventions for real-time learning assistance.
TenMarks believes that students learn best when they are individually engaged, nurtured, and motivated. Its programs are designed for the depth and rigor of the new math standards and every TenMarks lesson helps students build a strong conceptual foundation, improve problem-solving skills, and gain math confidence. TenMarks math programs have been used by millions of students across over 55,000 schools and over 12,000 districts.
