The seven countries of Central America lie like a string of pearls between the Caribbean Sea and the South Pacific Ocean, connecting the north of the continent to the south. They are precious because of their magnificent wildlife habitats, interesting history and significant cultural heritage, which make them ideal destinations for an educational and fun-filled family vacation. A visit to Central America provides a great opportunity to help kids learn about this very special part of the American landmass, whilst also having a great time.
Belize
Belize is a wonderful starting point, especially for those families interested in outdoor pursuits, natural history and wildlife – both on land and underwater. Activities aimed at family groups include swimming, snorkeling among the coral reefs, canoeing and diving. Watching Manatees is also popular and on land there are opportunities for kids to enjoy horseback riding and cycling.
The ancient Mayan and Aztec ruins in the steaming jungles, legacies from those former civilizations, help spark the imagination of youngsters, who will also enjoy visiting the Chaa Creek Natural History Center and the Blue Morpho Butterfly Farm. Most accommodation is equipped with swimming pools or spas, and resorts in Belize include beachfront condos, small luxury hotels and island villas.
Costa Rica
Although considered by some as an elite destination, Costa Rica is definitely family friendly and in San Jose there are lots of great places to go, plus some fascinating things to see and do. In the Central Valley, the Museo de los Niños - a museum designed for children - has interactive displays that educate children about many subjects. They can even experience the effects of a simulated earthquake. There are also special areas where kids can make music and dance.
On the Pacific Coast, a half-day cruise usually results in great dolphin and whale watching experiences; and at Monteverde, toddlers and older children can take part in the Sky Walk – a circular trail that includes huge suspension bridges offering fabulous view of the rainforest. There are many great places to stay in Costa Rica, and lots of the hotels have children’s clubs and other in-house activities to keep the whole family happy.
Guatemala
Antigua is a marvelous base for a family break in Guatemala, and there is always plenty to do and see as the city provides easy access to the surrounding areas. Full of historic buildings in traditional style dating from the 17th century, as well as ancient ruins, there are lots of open green spaces for kids to explore, such as the Parque Central, with its charming, tree-lined walkways designed in concentric circles leading to a sparkling fountain at the center. Taking Spanish classes at one of the many schools is fun, and young people with artistic interests will love the opportunity to participate in the local artisan workshops using textiles, jade or metal. Expeditions can involve a ride on a chicken bus to the bustling El Mercado, a tour of the Coffee Farm to pick coffee beans on the slopes of the volcano, or the perennial favorite with kids and adults alike – a visit to the ChocoMuseo to learn how to make chocolate.
The other Central American countries, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama and Honduras, are likewise hospitable and culturally rich, with accommodation similar to the resorts in Belize, and they also make great destinations for family vacations.
