How NOT to eat edamame

I have been hearing all this super-duper great stuff about how good edamame is for you, and how good it tastes- so I just had to get my hands on some.

I followed the directions to a “T”…which was basically stick bag in microwave for 6 minutes, cool for 1 minute, then sprinkle with salt. Serve.

Seems easy enough.

What the bag doesn’t say is exactly how to eat it.

I have seen edamame around, especially in Japanese restaurants, but never actually watched anyone eat it.

So I served it up on a plate with some salmon, and my husband and I each took a bite…putting the whole pod in our mouths, chewing it up.

Like a green bean, right? Wrong!

It was obvious that either the edamame wasn’t cooked enough (the bag did say 6 minutes?) or we just weren’t eating it right.

A little Google search led me to the conclusion that you are not supposed to eat the pods and can simply eat it a la artichoke style by scraping the beans into your mouth, or popping them out with your fingers.

Once we got the hang of it, these little soy beans are delicious! My daughter, who is super picky, especially liked them because she thinks she is just playing with her food.

If you haven’t tried edamame it is a must, but please, don’t make the same mistake we did and eat the pods.
