I was recently introduced to an absolutely fabulous line of all-weather, 100% merino wool clothing from a company called Icebreaker.
Northerners may already be aware of this clothing brand, but as a life-long Floridian, I have to shop far and wide (or exclusively online) to find base layers and versatile travel pieces for all-seasons.
Icebreaker is made from 100% merino wool from New Zealand, which is arguably the best natural fiber for base layer clothing. The wool keeps moisture away from the body, keeping you both warm and cool, depending on the climate you are in--It's a versatile fabric that's essential for traveling!
Recently my daughter and I were sent a few samples of Icebreaker to test out. I was very excited to receive a couple different pieces for her because I find shopping for kids base layers to be challenging. This was her first experience with merino wool, and when I told her what it was made from she was afraid it would feel scratchy on her skin (which can be true for low-quality wool). Much to her surprise, the 3 pieces she received were super soft and cozy-- I'm finding that she is practically living in the Girls Long Sleeve Hoody Flutter (seen above at right). We are still experiencing very mild weather this winter and the pieces are perfect for wearing alone. In the next month or two I would like to take her to see snow, and the Girls Oasis Crewe Print Ripple (below) will be perfect for wearing underneath the hoodie and other garments to keep her warm.
She also loves the matching (and reversible) Kids Pocket Hat!
Now that we have tried Icebreaker clothing, there are 4 main reasons I love it and will purchase in the future.
In no particular order:
1. Versatility - Icebreaker is made from 100% merino wool, which can be worn year-round. In the winter, the pieces can be worn as base layers, and in the summer they can be worn alone. In each instance they will keep you either warm or cool. It's nice to not have to pack away clothing and we will get more use out of the clothing, making Icebreaker a good investment.
2. Quality - Until you experience 100% merino wool, it is hard to compare the quality to anything else. The fabric is soft, stretchy and it holds up wash after wash; wear after wear. Wool fibers resist piling and snagging, so it is not unrealistic to get years of wear out of Icebreaker clothing. Icebreaker is also fire and UV resistant.
3. Packability - One of things I love most about Icebreaker is how easy it packs. I try to exclusively travel with a carry-on, so I am always looking for clothing that takes up minimal space without wrinkling.
4. Sustainability - Most piecess of Icebreaker clothing have a little green tag with a Baacode. This number, which is unique to each item, tracks the fiber that makes up the clothing back to the sheep herd it was produced from. Icebreaker Merino is sustainable, renewable, biodegradable, natural and made with integrity. From the website: "We have a deep commitment to animal welfare, the welfare of the people who work with us, and the environment. And we have nothing to hide."
How can you not love that?!
