What Kind of Chocolate Can You Use to Make Hot Cocoa Bombs?
When it comes to making homemade hot cocoa bombs you can create your chocolate mold with either chocolate flavored candy melts or regular chocolate chips. While both will work, candy melts will save you time and your sanity. I say this because candy melts are designed to do jobs such as this - they melt smoother, are pre-colored, and stay in a workable form for longer than a melted chocolate chip would.
I’ve tried making hot cocoa bombs with regular chocolate chips and while you CAN do it, they get very unmanageable fast. The chocolate is more liable to crack coming out of the mold and it’s just not worth it. Plus trying to color chocolate chips is difficult as you have to worry about the chocolate seizing up.
Take my word for it - it’s just better to go with candy melts.
What Do You Put Inside Hot Cocoa Bombs?
For a hands down magical Christmas experience, these Old Fashioned Christmas Candy hot cocoa bombs use traditional Christmas flavored candies, however when it comes to making a homemade hot cocoa bomb there are no hard and fast rules to follow.
While there aren’t hard and fast rules that you absolutely have to do, below are the guidelines I follow to make the most magical hot cocoa bomb experience.
If you’re using a candy or other non-marshmallow stuffing, you need to think about including something that’s going to:
- Add flavor
- Melt
- Compliment the Chocolate
What do I mean by this? Well, if you just put something inside that doesn’t add flavor, what are you even thinking?! It is a waste to add anything to your hot cocoa bomb that serves no purpose. The exception to this rule? Sprinkles...because sprinkles swirling around with marshmallows in a hot cup of cocoa is absolutely magical.
Also, make sure your hot cocoa bomb stuffing is prone to melting because you're drinking this and you don’t want to get pieces of candy stuck in the back of your throat. Repeat after me - choking is no fun.
And finally, make sure the chocolate is going to be complimented, because no one wants a gross tasting cup of hot cocoa.
How Many Marshmallows Do You Put Inside Hot Cocoa Bombs?
As many as you want that will fit in the hot cocoa bomb. The marshmallows are going to melt in the hot cocoa, so you can put more than I did. I did somewhere between 5-8, so plenty, but if you want more, stuff that hot cocoa bomb full!
What You Need to Make Old Fashioned Hot Cocoa Bombs
- 2 cups White Candy Melts
- 2 cups Hot Chocolate Mix
- 2 cups Mini Marshmallows
- ¼ cup Red Candy Melts
- ¼ cup Orange Candy melts
- ½ cup Crushed Old Fashioned Christmas Candies
How to Make Old Fashioned Hot Cocoa Bombs
- Place each of the candy melts in separate microwave safe bowls and melt in the microwave per the directions on the package.
- With a piping bag or fork, drizzle orange candy melts across each of the molds in one direction - about 4 lines. Repeat drizzling the red candy melts across the molds, but working in the opposite direction.
- Place the bomb molds into the freezer for 5 minutes.
- Remove molds from the freezer and place 1 tablespoon of the white melted candy melt into one half of a bomb mold and, using the bottom of your tablespoon measuring spoon, press the chocolate up the sides of the mold, keeping it thick but even, taking care to gently work the chocolate against the chocolate already in the molds to work out air pockets. Repeat with 12 bomb mold halves.
- Place the chocolate filled bomb molds into the freezer for 5 minutes.
- Remove molds from the freezer and gently tap the sides of the mold, pressing on one side of the chocolate to make the chocolate slide out of the mold.
- Fill 6 of the molds with 1 tablespoon hot chocolate mix, 1 tablespoon crushed Old Fashioned Christmas Candies and 6-8 mini marshmallows.
- Heat a plate or a flat-bottom bowl in the microwave until the surface of the plate is warm to the touch.
- Press one of the empty chocolate bomb halves open-side-down onto the flat portion of the warm plate for about 10 seconds. This will gently melt the rim of the chocolate cup.
- Immediately press this warmed edge chocolate cup to the top of one of the filled cups. This will join the two halves of the hot cocoa bomb.
- Using a piping bag or a fork, drizzle a small amount of the remaining candy melts over the assembled hot cocoa bombs then immediately follow by sprinkling additional crushed Old Fashioned Christmas Candies over them.
- Place the hot cocoa bombs into the freezer for 5 minutes to get them to set, then remove and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use.
- To use the hot cocoa bombs, place them in a mug and pour 2 cups hot milk over the top. Stir until the hot cocoa bombs are completely melted and enjoy!
