As adults, we can feel when our mattress begins to wear out— I know I started to get backaches and experienced restless nights right around the 7-8 year mark. It then took my husband and I another 1-2 years to actually come to the realization that our mattress needed to be replaced.
Right now we’re in the market for a new bed, and while doing a bit of research I came across the importance of “Replace Every 8“. Mattress Firm suggests replacing your mattress every 8 years for the healthiest sleep — if this is the case, then our daughter, who's 10, is also in need of a new mattress. It never even occurred to me that she would need an upgrade because she doesn't complain about her bed like I do, but it makes perfect sense because the twin mattress she sleeps on now is the same from when she was a toddler.
I want my daughter to have the right comfort and support when she sleeps as she enters her tween/teen years. On average, adolescents need nine hours and 15 minutes of sleep each night to function best, and that's only possible when they have the correct mattress. Because Mattress Firm "Grows with You", I want to get her involved with selecting her new mattress, which will carry her into adulthood.
Here's a few tips for buying your tween or teen a new mattress, courtesy of Mattress Firm.
- Size: While twin beds are common for younger children, larger beds allow for future growth and tend to be preferred by teens. While shopping, consider your child’s preference and bedroom space to find the best fit. As an added bonus, these beds often become guest beds when children leave home.
- Firmness: It is incredibly beneficial for adolescents to have a supportive mattress so that their spine and back are properly supported while they are growing. The mattress should be comfortable for your teen, with firm support, yet enough padding to relieve pressure. To help your child choose the best mattress, test each bed with them at the store to determine the best fit for their needs.
- Other needs: If your child has allergies or asthma, you may opt for a synthetic-filled mattress to resist dust mites and allergens. When shopping for a bed, look for mattresses that also have microbial or hypoallergenic fill and covers, like the Lux Living Premium Elite mattress protector from Protect-A-Bed, to help reduce these potential problems.
- Pillows: When purchasing a new mattress, it's also a good time to think about replacing pillows, too. For both children and adults, pillows should be replaced every 2 years.
Whether you're buying your child's first mattress or one for your growing teen, Mattress Firm is supportive in every phase of a person’s life.

I learned when shopping for a mattress and considering which firmness, make sure your child's bed is firm because they need firm support to ensure their spine and bones develop properly and stay in alignment.
