What Kind of Chocolate Can You Use to Make Hot Cocoa Bombs?
While picking your favorite side when it comes to Twix candy bars might be hard to differentiate, picking between melting chocolates and regular chocolate chips is not so hard. Melting chocolates are hands down the winner and the side you should be on.
I like to use melting chocolates because they just melt more smoothly, stay smooth and workable for longer and they’re less prone to seizing up if they get a little hot by accident. Not to say they won't’ seize, but they’re less prone to doing so.
I tried making hot cocoa bombs with regular chocolate chips and while you CAN do it, they get very unmanageable fast. The chocolate is more liable to crack coming out of the mold and it’s just not worth it.
Candy melts are also pre-colored, so you don’t have to worry about the chocolate seizing up as you color it. While we did not color our Twix Hot Cocoa bombs, if you want to add a pop of colors to yours you definitely should try.
When it comes to picking sides on this always go with candy melts.
What Do You Put Inside Hot Cocoa Bombs?
There’s no science to what you can stuff inside your hot cocoa bombs. But I do have some recommendations, just to make your experience as fantastic as possible.
If you’re using a candy or other non-marshmallow stuffing, you need to think about including something that’s going to:
- Add flavor
- Melt
- Compliment the Chocolate
What do I mean by this? Well, if you just put something inside that doesn’t add flavor, what’s the point?! Seems like a waste. Sprinkles are fun to see swirling around with the marshmallows when your hot cocoa bomb explodes, but outside of sprinkles, make sure it’s worth the effort to add it.
Also your hot cocoa bomb stuffing needs to be prone to melting and candy chopped up small. You're drinking this and you don’t want to choke.
And finally, make sure the chocolate is going to be complimented, because the goal is a delicious cup of hot cocoa not a weird tasting concoction.
How Many Marshmallows Do You Put Inside Hot Cocoa Bombs?
As many as you want that will fit in the hot cocoa bomb. The marshmallows are going to melt in the hot cocoa, so you can put more than I did. I did somewhere between 5-8, so plenty, but if you want more, stuff that hot cocoa bomb full!
What You Need to Make Twix Hot Cocoa Bombs
- 2 cups Chocolate Candy Melts
- 2 cups Hot Chocolate Mix
- 2 cups Mini Marshmallows
- 4 Twix Candies (individual sticks)
How to Make Twix Hot Cocoa Bombs
- Roughly chop 2 of your Twix candies. Cut the other two into 6 small sections. Set aside.
- Place chocolate candy melts in a microwave safe bowl and melt in the microwave per the directions on the package.
- Place 1 tablespoon melted candy melt into one half of a bomb mold and, using the bottom of your tablespoon measuring spoon, press the chocolate up the sides of the mold, keeping it thick but even. Repeat with 12 bomb mold halves.
- Place the chocolate filled bomb molds into the freezer for 5 minutes.
- Remove molds from the freezer and gently tap the sides of the mold, pressing on one side of the chocolate to make the chocolate slide out of the mold.
- Fill 6 of the molds with 1 tablespoon hot chocolate mix, 1 tablespoon chopped candy bar, and 6-8 mini marshmallows.
- Heat a plate or a flat-bottom bowl in the microwave until the surface of the plate is warm to the touch.
- Press one of the empty chocolate bomb halves open-side-down onto the flat portion of the warm plate for about 10 seconds. This will gently melt the rim of the chocolate cup.
- Immediately press this warmed edge chocolate cup to the top of one of the filled cups. This will join the two halves of the hot cocoa bomb.
- Using a piping bag or a fork, place a teaspoon of the remaining chocolate candy melts on top of the assembled hot cocoa bombs then immediately follow by placing an additional piece of candy bar on this chocolate dab.
- Place the hot cocoa bombs into the freezer for 5 minutes to get them to set, then remove and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use.
- To use the hot cocoa bombs, place them in a mug and pour 2 cups hot milk over the top. Stir until the hot cocoa bombs are completely melted and enjoy!
