Christmas Ornament Hot Cocoa Bombs
What Kind of Chocolate Can You Use to Make Hot Cocoa Bombs?
The holidays are crazy enough as is, so when it comes to making your Christmas Ornament Hot Cocoa Bombs, we have a couple secrets to make your creations easier.
The first secret? Use melting chocolates. These chocolates melt more smoothly, stay smooth and workable for longer and they’re less prone to seizing up if they get a little hot by accident. Not to say they won't’ seize, but they’re less prone to doing so.
I’ve tried making hot cocoa bombs with regular chocolate chips and while you CAN do it, they get very unmanageable fast. The chocolate is more liable to crack coming out of the mold and it’s just not worth it.
Candy melts are also pre-colored, so you don’t have to worry about the chocolate seizing up as you color it or worry about big messes from little helpers - it’s just better to go with candy melts.
What Do You Put Inside Hot Cocoa Bombs?
There’s no science to what you can stuff inside your hot cocoa bombs. But if you are wanting to add more than sprinkles and marshmallows I do have some recommendations to make your experience magical.
If you’re using a candy or other non-marshmallow stuffing, you need to think about including something that’s going to:
- Add flavor
- Melt
- Compliment the Chocolate
What do I mean by this? Well, if you just put something inside that doesn’t add flavor, what’s the point?! Seems like a waste. Sprinkles are fine, but that’s part of the experience when the hot cocoa bombs explode and you get to see the sprinkles swirling around with the marshmallows.
Make sure your hot cocoa bomb stuffing is prone to melting because you're drinking this and you don’t want to choke.
And finally, make sure the chocolate is going to be complimented, because you don’t want a gross tasting cup of hot cocoa.
How Many Marshmallows Do You Put Inside Hot Cocoa Bombs?
As many as you want that will fit in the hot cocoa bomb. The marshmallows are going to melt in the hot cocoa, so you can put more than I did. I did somewhere between 5-8, so plenty, but if you want more, stuff that hot cocoa bomb full!
What You Need to Make Christmas Ornament Hot Cocoa Bombs
- 1 cup White Candy Melts
- 1 cup Green Candy Melts
- 1 cup Red Candy Melts
- 2 cups Hot Chocolate Mix
- 2 cups Mini Marshmallows
- 12 Rolo Candies
- 1 tablespoon Coarse Ground Salt
- 2 tablespoon Christmas Sprinkles
How to Make Christmas Ornament Hot Cocoa Bombs
- Place candy melts in separate microwave safe bowls and melt in the microwave per the directions on the package.
- Drizzle, with a piping bag or fork, some of the red candy melts over a few of the molds, being careful to do sets of two that are very similar as you will want to match them up for your ornaments. You can do drops, swirls, starbursts, lines, anything. You can even add sprinkles to some of them for additional interest.
- Place the chocolate filled bomb molds into the freezer for 5 minutes.
- Remove molds from the freezer then place 1 tablespoon melted white candy melts or green candy melts into one half of a bomb mold and, using the bottom of your tablespoon measuring spoon, press the chocolate up the sides of the mold, keeping it thick but even and filling any gaps with gentle pressure. Repeat with the remaining 12 bomb mold halves. Again, take care that as you do this you work with the sets you created, so your ornaments are going to look matchy-matchy.
- Place the chocolate filled bomb molds into the freezer for 5 minutes.
- Remove molds from the freezer and gently tap the sides of the mold, pressing on one side of the chocolate to make the chocolate slide out of the mold.
- Fill 6 of the molds with 2 tablespoon hot chocolate mix and 6-8 mini marshmallows. Remember to work with only one of each pair.
- Heat a plate or a flat-bottom bowl in the microwave until the surface of the plate is warm to the touch.
- Press one of the empty chocolate bomb halves open-side-down onto the flat portion of the warm plate for about 10 seconds. This will gently melt the rim of the chocolate cup.
- Immediately press this warmed edge chocolate cup to the top of the matching filled cups. This will join the two halves of the hot cocoa bomb.
- Decorate as desired by adding sprinkles around the midline or using a bowl of sugar to roll some of the assembled hot cocoa bombs in to add some additional sparkle.
- Place remaining chocolate candy melts in dollops on top of each ornament then press a Rolo candy on top of the candy melts. To the candy melts that dribble out, you can add sprinkles or sugar.
- Place the hot cocoa bombs into the freezer for 5 minutes to get them to set, then remove and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use.
- To use the hot cocoa bombs, place them in a mug and pour 2 cups hot milk over the top. Stir until the hot cocoa bombs are completely melted and enjoy!
