But, of course, before we go on, we should chat a little about how this apple butter is for more than just your breakfast table. I know! Mind-blowing!
What can you do with apple butter?
I get it, not everybody is as familiar with home cooking foods. Some of us are just kind of learning. We all have to start somewhere. But then there are a few people for which this is all "old hat". Whichever you are, it sometimes nice to know where your new favorite recipe is best served. For apple butter, the list is long, but these are some of my favorites.
- Spread it on toast.
- Stir it into oatmeal.
- Drizzle it over pancakes or waffles.
- Add a little bowl of it to a charcuterie board.
- Mix it in a cake or cupcakes.
- Brush some on a chicken or turkey in the last 5-10 minutes of cooking.
- Add it as a garnish on the Thanksgiving dinner table like cranberry sauce.
- Replace use of apple sauce in baking.
Ingredients:
-
6 apples (2 lbs) peeled, cored and sliced
-
2 tbs brown sugar
-
2 tbs granulated sugar
-
½ teaspoon cinnamon
-
⅛ teaspoon nutmeg
-
⅛ teaspoon salt
-
⅛ teaspoon ground ginger
Directions:
-
Peel, core and slice apples.
-
Place all apples into a crock pot.
-
If using green apples, increase the sugars by 1 tablespoon to help balance the tartness of green apples.
-
Cook on HIGH for 5 hours or LOW for 10 hours.
-
Apples will begin to caramelize and mash easily with a spoon.
-
Transfer fully cooked apples to a blender or food processor. An immersion blender may also be used.
-
Blend until smooth (about 1-2 minutes).
-
Transfer to mason jar or Air tight container.
-
Allow apple butter to completely cool (about an 1.5-2 hrs) at room temperature.
-
Refrigerate after cooled.
And that's it! Chop, mix, cook and blend. Then you have an amazing apple butter that's perfect for toast, garnish at Thanksgiving dinner and so much more!
