The Sunshine State: who wouldn't want to live in a place where it is summer all year long, surrounded by the ocean, with plenty of sunshine to enjoy? Moving to Florida should be an exciting chapter in one’s life -- so why is such an event sometimes clouded by stress and worry?
When it comes to the universal list of stressful events one could ever experience, moving to a new home, especially a new home in another state, is usually right at the top. But what most people don’t realize is that it doesn't have to be. Moving can be fun and easy.
Believe it or not, moving is actually one of those things that just takes a little time and careful organization in order to be successful. Sure, there’s hard work involved, but that’s true for most worthwhile things in life. Here are some things to keep in mind while preparing to move to Florida.
The Calendar is Your Friend
Knowing that the calendar is a true asset is winning half the battle when moving across state lines. It is a good idea to not only set up a timeline of events for the entire relocation process, but to also set up reminders for everything, including a deadline to booking the movers and the travel to the new state, to canceling magazine subscriptions and withdrawing the kids from school. One of the biggest stress factors during a move is the scramble to get all the little things done at the end. Don’t let that happen! Stay organized and plan things out well in advance.
Get to Know Your New Neighborhood
Moving to Florida isn't like moving to any other state – the landscape, the climate, and the culture are quite unique. A good way to mentally and emotionally prepare for the move is to get to know the new area before relocating. Contact the Chamber of Commerce or City Hall and request a new resident package. Do a little research online. If possible, plan a quick weekend trip to explore the area surrounding the new house and experience at first-hand what is waiting ahead. This is a great way for the kids to get an idea of what their new neighborhood and state will be like.
Getting Your Stuff to Florida
When a family relocates across state lines, a DIY move isn't always feasible due to logistics and time limitations. There are also too many things to worry about, such as packing up the house, moving the belongings, transporting cars, and getting the kids and pets to the new house. For many people, hiring a moving company will alleviate the bulk of the stress, which is great; however, a do-it-yourself move and hiring a moving company aren't the only two choices. Many families experience a great level of success with shipping pods, which allow them to pack up the house at their own pace while the company handles the transport of their belongings. And always remember, don’t move what won’t be used – moving is a great excuse to make donations, give stuff away, or to hold a tag sale!
