Copycat Bennigan's Monte Cristo Recipe - My all-time favorite sandwich recipe. I have fond memories of eating this sandwich as a teen at Bennigan's.

Bennigan's Monte Cristo

Goodbye to the Monte Cristo 🙁

With most of the Bennigan's closing could this be the end of my favorite deep-fried, high-calorie sandwich?

I don't see how any company could go bankrupt with this golden nugget on their menu!

Update: Possibly some good news for old-school Bennigan's fans! It seems the casual dining chain is trying to make a comeback and there are more than a dozen new Bennigan's restaurants open with the Monte Cristo ON THE MENU!

In the meantime, here is a copycat recipe to make your own Bennigan's Monte Cristo at home.

Bennigan's Monte Cristo Recipe

Monte Cristo Ingredients:

Sandwich:

  • 9 slices whole-wheat bread
  • 3 slices turkey breast
  • 3 slices ham
  • 3 slices American cheese
  • 3 slices Swiss cheese
  • Confectioners sugar
  • Raspberry jam

Batter:

  • 1 egg
  • 1-1 ¼ cup water
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 ½ cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • vegetable oil for deep frying

How to Make Bennigans Monte Cristo

1. Place turkey and Swiss cheese on one slice of bread and ham and American cheese on another slice of bread.

2. Place third slice in-between and secure the triple-decker sandwich in the corners with toothpicks.

3. Place egg in mixing bowl, add water and beat together.

4. Add salt, sugar, flour, and baking powder. Beat batter until smooth.

5. Dip sandwich in batter and carefully cover all the sides and surface.

6. Carefully place in hot oil and fry until golden.

7. When sandwich has turned a warm gold color remove from hot oil and place on paper towel.

8. Let cool for a few minutes before removing the toothpicks.

9. Before serving slice into fourths and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

10. Serve with Raspberry jam.

You can’t use wet batter in an airfryer, it will just drip off of the food unfortunately

How do you dip the sandwich and get it completely covered? I made these sandwiches once, they were delicious, but covering the sandwich with the batter was the messiest thing I've ever made! I thought there has to be a better way to do this. I'd love to try your recipe once I know how to make them less messy. Thanks!!!
