Valentine's Day Hot Cocoa Bombs
If you haven't seen the hot cocoa bomb phenomenon, you are missing out on a perfect treat. Taken over the world thanks to TikTok videos and social media, this fun little candy idea is a great way to make hot chocolate even more fun and special. A little chocolate mold is filled with cocoa mix and your favorite toppings. What a fun idea!
What is the Best Chocolate to Make Cocoa Bombs?
Hot cocoa bombs have a chocolate base that is filled with goodies. You will need a good quality melting chocolate or chocolate chip. I prefer using Ghiradelli chocolate for this since it is quality and melts nicely.
If you want to add different colors and not just milk chocolate, you may also enjoy a good melting chocolate or candy wafer. Wilton brand is popular and come sin a number of colors. You could easily use pink, white, red, or traditional milk chocolate for this.
What Can I Put Inside the Hot Chocolate Bombs?
Below are my favorite additions to hot cocoa bombs, but you can include anything you would normally add to a cup of cocoa.
- Hot cocoa mix in various flavors: red velvet, salted caramel, peppermint, dark chocolate, birthday cake, or other flavors.
- Sprinkles or candy pieces in holiday colors or different flavors. Chocolate sprinkles or a Valentine's Day sprinkle blend are best.
- Crushed cookies or candy like OREO cookies, crushed peppermint candy, or red hot candies.
- Miniature marshmallows - plain or different flavors.
What Mold Should I Use?
You can use any chocolate mold you prefer. For this, I found a heart shaped mold on Amazon that works well. You will also see round ones and other shapes. Pick what you prefer and make. It is best to use the silicone style mold for removing it easily.
Ingredients
- Chocolate chips or melting chocolate

How to Make Valentine Heart Hot Cocoa Bombs
Place a small plate in the freezer.
In a microwave safe bowl, melt chocolate in 30-second increments until mostly melted.
Stir the chocolate well and heat an additional 15-seconds if needed until all lumps are gone.
Use a spoon to drop a dollop of chocolate into the mold, and use the back of the spoon to spread an even layer of chocolate up the edges of the heart shape.
Wipe any excess chocolate off the top of the mold, and place into the freezer for 10-15 minutes until solid.
Repeat this to create a total of 6 heart halves. You need 2 per cocoa bomb.
Carefully remove the hearts from the molds and place on the already chilled plate.
Add a packet or 2 heaping spoons of cocoa into three of the hearts.
Place a few marshmallows, sprinkles, or cookie bits into each heart.
Use a hot spoon or plate to melt the edge of the empty heart slightly.
Press the empty heart on top of the filled heart and hold to stick. Add additional melted chocolate along the edge if needed.
To use, place the cocoa bomb into a mug and pour hot milk over the top. The chocolate will melt and ingredients will pop out of the heart and into the mug. Stir well and enjoy!
