If you are like me, then you love a good cup of hot cocoa on a cold day. However, I find that the prep work for making it can be tedious and sometimes messy. Well these Whoppers Hot Cocoa Bombs are perfect because they take just minutes to make AND cleanup is cut down to just a few dishes!
Honestly, you can have these made and in the hands of little ones to "pop" in their mugs in about 15 minutes. And there's no mess once you give the kids the hot chocolate bombs. They won't be scooping and splashing.
Just dropping, pouring, stirring. Easy. Peasy.
Whoppers Hot Cocoa Bombs
How to make hot cocoa bombs
You’ll need a silicone baking mold, about 2.5” in diameter, in the shape of a sphere to make your hot chocolate bombs. While there are larger molds available, 2.5” is the average size so they easily fit into mugs - even the smaller ones!
Which chocolate is best to use for hot cocoa bombs?
Because they’re super convenient, I like to use candy melts. You can use any flavor or color, I generally go with chocolate, dark chocolate, or vanilla - they all melt the same! You can melt your candy melts in the microwave in 15-second increments, or use the double boiler method. But, if you don't like candy melts, you can use any type of chocolate that melts well without burning.
You can even use a bar of chocolate, but if you do, chop it up into small pieces. This makes the chocolate melt more evenly, regardless of the heating method you use. Candy melts are already all the same size and melt pretty evenly.
Toppings for Hot Cocoa Bombs
You can top your cocoa bombs with anything from drizzled chocolate or caramel, to mini chocolate or vanilla chips. Like with this recipe, I’ve even topped them with cookie and candy bar pieces! After you’ve topped them with the drizzles of your choice, top with whatever you feel like and let them set in the refrigerator.
Cracking open the cocoa bombs
Pour hot milk over your hot chocolate bomb to get it to pop open. Sometimes it's recommend to just drop the hot cocoa bomb into your hot milk, but if it’s not quite hot enough, the hot cocoa bomb may just melt on the bottom and you won’t get to see it do the popping open in the same way. Pouring your heated milk over the top seems to give the prettiest result.
Are hot cocoa bombs difficult to make?
Even though they look complicated, hot cocoa bombs are actually surprisingly simple to make. The kids enjoy add the chocolate to the silicone molds, and filling the bombs before we seal them. Of course, pouring hot milk over the top and popping them open tends to be everyone’s favorite part.
