How to Pick Out a Bath Bomb Mold:
Ok before we get into the nitty gritty details on how to make the mermaid bath bombs, we gotta cover the bath bomb molds.
There are a ton of different styles of bath bomb molds out there, but in my experience silicone bath bomb molds are the easiest to work with. And although I used a hard one this time, I do, if you can find one, recommend sticking with silicone.
If you can't do silicone, definitely grab chocolate molds. Like silicone, they're:
- Typically Dishwasher Safe
- Hold Shape Well
- Inexpensive
Besides the mold, though, there are some things you’re going to need to make these playful Mermaid Bath Bombs that you might not have just laying around the house:
- Citric Acid (buy it in bulk or on Amazon to get a better price)
- SLSA
- White Bentonite or Kaolin Clay
- Polysorbate 80 (This helps distribute the coconut oil evenly through the bath bombs and keeps the color from sticking to the sides of your tub, so you really want it.)
- Scented Oils
- Mica Powder
Not all of these things are required to make these particular bath bombs, but they are great to have on hand if you're planning to make bath bombs on the regular.
Before we hop on all that, though, if you're loving this recipe, but don't have time to make it right now, be sure to pin this to your favorite easy bath and beauty recipes board on Pinterest so you can find it fast again when you are ready!
What You Need to Make Mermaid Bath Bombs
- 1 cup baking soda
- ½ cup citric acid
- ½ cup cornstarch
- ¼ cup epsom salts
- 2 tablespoon melted coconut oil
- ½ teaspoon essential oil blend desired (or coconut flavoring oil, since that’s what I wanted)
- 2 teaspoon rubbing alcohol
- 1 teaspoon okinawa blue mica powder
- 1 teaspoon gold nugget mica powder
- 2-4 tablespoons mermaid sprinkles blend
- Mermaid Tail Mold
How to Make Mermaid Bath Bombs
- Whisk together the baking soda, citric acid, cornstarch and epsom salts.
- In a second bowl, combine the melted coconut oil, essential oil blend and alcohol together, mixing well.
- Add liquid ingredients 1 teaspoon at a time to the dry ingredients, mixing it together slowly so as not to start the fizzy reaction.
- To the bath bomb mixture, add in the blue mica powder and mix well. If you want more color, add some additional mica powder in 1 teaspoon increments.
- Dust the bottom of the bath bomb molds with the gold mica powder.
- Immediately pack the bath bomb mold overly full of the blue mixture. Then pack it down tightly and remove excess from the back.
- Press about 1 teaspoon of sprinkle mixture into the back of each bath bomb.
- Allow the bath bombs to rest in the mold for up to 24 hours before gently tapping the side of the mold to release the bombs.
- Use your bath bombs immediately or store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use!
