Polymer Clay Avocado Cutie BFF Charm Set - Kids Craft Idea
What is Polymer Clay?
Polymer clay is a type of modeling clay that is made from polymers. It is a very versatile material that can be used to create a wide variety of items. It is available in many different colors and can be mixed together to create new colors. Polymer clay is non-toxic and safe for kids to use.
Why Use Polymer Clay Instead of Air Dry Clay?
Polymer clay is a much better choice for making charms or keychains because it is more durable and will not break as easily. Air dry clay can also be used, but it is not as strong and may crack or break if dropped.
Do You Need Special Tools to Work With Polymer Clay?
No, you don't need any special tools to work with polymer clay. All you need is your hands and an oven. So simple and if you do decide you need tools, you can use things from around the house!
Do You Need to Seal Your Polymer Clay Charms When Finished?
No, you do not need to seal your charms. But, if you decide that you want to, you will need to seal your polymer clay charms with a clear sealer made for polymer clay. You can find clear polymer clay sealers at most craft stores.

HOW DO YOU MAKE THIS EASY POLYMER CLAY AVOCADO CRAFT?
- Preheat your oven to the temperature noted on your clay packaging. For my clay the baking temperature is 230-degrees F.
- To make the body of the avocados, break off a small portion (about 1 inch square) of the light green clay.
- Roll this light green clay into a nice, neat ball that is very smooth, then roll and shape the top half (your choice of which end is the top) into a bit of a skinnier end. This should be as rounded and smooth as you can get it and look kind of like a whole avocado.
- Break off a small portion (about ¼-inch square) of the dark green clay.
- Spread and mash or roll this dark green clay into a very thin (less than ⅛-inch thick) sheet that is very clean and smooth.
- Wrap this sheet of dark green clay around the light green clay avocado shape. Gently smooth the edges and work any lumps out, retaining the avocado shape.
- Mash the bottom end of the avocado shape into a flat bottom.
- Using a butter knife or craft knife, starting from the top or side, cut the avocado in half, giving you two identical shapes.
- With your chopstick or dowel, work a small hole into the center of each avocado half.
- Break off a very very small piece of the brown clay and roll it into a very clean, smooth ball.
- Place this brown ball into the hole in one of the avocado halves. If it doesn't fit nicely, remove or add brown clay as necessary.
- Clean your fingerprints and tiny imperfections from your kitten by gently brushing the clay with a paintbrush dampened in rubbing alcohol. This does not have to be super wet with the alcohol, just a little goes a long way. Take care to brush the light green parts first, followed by the dark green and brown so that none of the darker colored clay smears on your light green clay.
- Bake the clay avocados per the instructions on your clay packaging. Allow to cool completely before handling.
- Using the end of a toothpick, draw on a smile and two dots for eyes.
- Using a small paintbrush, add two pink cheek blushes to either side of the smile on both avocados.
- Using the end of a toothpick, place the smallest dot of white paint on the black part of the eyes.
- Allow the paint to dry then enjoy!
Isn't this just the funnest little craft?! If you wanted to turn it into a charm, you'll just add an eye hook and chain. I personally just love having the figure on my desk.
