Easy and Fun DIY Taco Bath Bombs
How to Pick Out a Bath Bomb Mold:
Ok before we get into the nitty gritty details on how to make the mermaid bath bombs, we gotta cover the bath bomb molds.
There are a ton of different styles of bath bomb molds out there, but in my experience silicone bath bomb molds are the easiest to work with. And although I used metal bath bombs for this particular craft, I can't wait to make some bath bombs with silicone molds.
Silicone bath bomb molds are:
- Easy to find in a wide array of shapes online
- Dishwasher safe
- Affordable
- Easy to store
- And super easy to remove your bath bomb from the mold without damaging it!
Ok. So, here’s what you’re going to need to make these playful Taco Bath Bombs that you might not have just laying around the house:
- Citric Acid (buy it in bulk or on Amazon to get a better price)
- SLSA
- White Bentonite or Kaolin Clay
- Polysorbate 80 – This helps distribute the coconut oil evenly through the bath bombs and keeps the color from sticking to the sides of your tub, so you really want it.
- Lemon Extract
- Yellow Mica Powder
- Blue Mica Powder
- Taco Sprinkles
- Bath Bomb Mold
Before we hop on all that, though, if you're loving this bath bomb tutorial, but don't have time to make it right now, be sure to pin this to your favorite easy bath and beauty recipes board on Pinterest so you can find it fast again when you are ready!
What You Need to Make DIY Taco Bath Bombs
- 1 ½ cup baking soda
- ¾ cup citric acid
- 1 tablespoon bentonite clay (I used: https://www.amazon.com/Bentonite-Clay-Powder-Pharmaceutical-Grade/dp/B07XTPZNB2)
- 1 tablespoon epsom salts
- 2 tablespoon melted coconut oil
- ½ teaspoon essential oil blend desired (or coconut and lemon extract, since that’s what I wanted)
- ½ tablespoon polysorbate 80 (to keep the colorant from sticking to the bathtub)
- 1 teaspoon yellow mica powder
- ½ teaspoon blue mica powder
- 2-4 tablespoons taco sprinkles blend
- ½ teaspoon alcohol (to wet the mixture if necessary at the end of the mixing if it dries out while putting the mixture into the molds)
- ½ teaspoon cornstarch
How to Make DIY Taco Bath Bombs
- Whisk together the baking soda, citric acid, clay and epsom salts.
- In a second bowl, combine the melted coconut oil, essential oil blend and polysorbate 80 together, mixing well.
- Add liquid ingredients 1 teaspoon at a time to the dry ingredients, mixing it together slowly so as not to start the fizzy reaction.
- Add the yellow and blue mica powder and stir until the color is consistent throughout. If you would like a more intense color, add more mica powder in 1 teaspoon increments, stirring between each increment until you have the color you want. Keep in mind that the color will fade a little when the mixture dries.
- Dust the bottom of one side of the bath bomb mold with cornstarch. The sprinkle side tends to come out on its own, so do not bother to dust that side with cornstarch.
- Place about 1 teaspoon of sprinkles in the non-dusted side of the bath bomb mold.
- Immediately pack each side of the bath bomb mold with the mixture. Pack extra bath bomb mixture between the two molds, then press the two sides together, grinding and pressing them to force the two together.
- Allow the bath bombs to rest in the mold for up to 24 hours before gently tapping the top and side of the mold to release the bombs.
- Use your bath bombs immediately or store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use!
