This Peppermint Sugar Scrub is as scrumptious as it sounds! Double or triple the recipe for an easy homemade gift idea.
In an effort to cut back on my holiday spending, I decided to make some of my gifts for friends and family this year. With a lot of women on my list, the obvious choice was to put together something bath and body related. I'm not super crafty, but I know how to mix a few ingredients — which is why I settled on making a Peppermint Sugar Scrub.
This DIY (do-it-yourself) recipe is super easy and inexpensive to make in batches. Plus, the scrub works just as well, if not better, than the expensive sugar scrubs you find in specialty boutiques.
Peppermint Sugar Scrub Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 cups sugar
- ¼ cup coconut oil or other carrier oil — you may use more depending on desired consistency
- Red food coloring
- Peppermint essential oil
- Mason jars with lids — makes multiple 4 oz and ½ pint jars or 1 full pint jar
How to Make Peppermint Sugar Scrub:
1. Pour sugar into medium-sized mixing bowl
2. Add coconut oil until desired consistency is reached; stir
3. Place a few drops of peppermint essential oil into the mixture
4. Divide your sugar scrub mix into two equal portions
5. Add a drop or two of food coloring into one of the portions (be careful not to add too much!)
6. In a mason jar, alternate pink and white layers of colored sugar to create a "candy cane" effect. Press sugar down with a spoon to compact between layers.
7. Print sticker labels for the front of the jar and add a ribbon for gifting. (I used a full sheet of sticker paper and punched out the circles with a scalloped edge paper punch).

"Disclaimer": The red food coloring turned my hands red and the peppermint oil is very strong and ended up burning my eyes. I like this idea and my hands feel good with coconut oil rubbed in , however I won't use food coloring or peppermint oil next time around. Thank you

Has anyone found the peppermint oil? I am not sure where to find it....
Robin
I got my peppermint oil at Sprouts.
Stefanie Fauquet
You can find it at most health foods stores, Whole Foods comes to mind and I want to say Trader Joe's carries it. Also, one of the cheapest places to find essential oils online is Vitacost.com. 🙂 This {referral} link will save you $10 off your first order: https://www.vitacostrewards.com/8f2VGZ3
Matt
Dollar general carries it for $4

Jayde
Do you have directions for use for this? I'm wanting to print a sticky label with directions for my family when I give it as a gift :).
Rebecca
Great idea! But about how many will one batch make?
Stefanie Fauquet
This recipe makes one regular size mason jar of sugar scrub. If you find smaller jars, you could split it into two batches.
julie
I am definitely making these for my friends this Christmas. Coconut oil is so good for your skin, too! One question….Do you melt the coconut oil prior to mixing it with the sugar?
Stefanie Fauquet
Hi Julie,
The coconut oil should be in liquid form. You would just need to warm it up so that it becomes liquid... but not too warm.
kim
Thank you! I was wondering about that 🙂
Christianne
HI!! I love this idea and am so excited to give as gifts this Christmas. Thanks for sharing! 🙂 One question. I am new to the mason jar craze. When you say "regular" size jar, is that a pint size? Half pint? The one in the pic looks like a 4 oz but I can't tell............thanks!!
Stefanie Fauquet
I will update the post. The jar size for the recipe would be a pint (2 cups) plus some leftover 🙂 You could use pint or multiple 1/2 pint or 4oz jars.
Christianne
Great!! Thanks!!
Teresa N Belangeri
Should the mix be loose and flakey, like regular sugar consistency?? Mine is not an applesauce texture like some recipes I have made
Stefanie Fauquet
Hi, No it should not be flakey like regular sugar. I would add more oil a few drops at a time until the right consistency is acheived. 😉
TERESA
Mine came out like cornmeal.. I have not had or used sugar scrubs before ..should it's texture be more like applesauce or wet sand ?
Caitlin
Will the use of coconut oil require the sugar scrub to be heated up before use or will the scrub remain soft?
Jessica
I love this idea, I'm totally making these for my female coworkers this year! Will the red food coloring rub off and stain your skin though?
Kim
I'm wondering the same thing about the food coloring staining the skin. I'd hate for the recipient to turn red on my account!
Stefanie Fauquet
Hi Kim,
I made a batch for myself and used it and the coloring has not stained my skin. I think there are a few reasons for this: 1. I only used 1-2 drops of coloring 2. I don't leave the scrub on my skin for an extended period of time; just a minute or so to get the dead skin cells off and then rinse 3. The coloring seems to bond with the sugar and only a bit of oil residue is left behind (which softens skin). I hope this helps!
Shan
Hi, just a quick question. How coarse should the sugar be? I'm used to salt scrub but not sugar scrub. Would salt dissolve in the oil solution?
Stefanie Fauquet
I haven't tried it with salt, but I'd imagine it would work just the same!
Donna
Just regular granulated sugar
Kim
Thanks Stefanie!
malena
Hey everyone, im.having a christmas in july bridal shower so I was going to make these sugar scrubs for favors. How far in advance is it ok to make and will it last some time or get funky?
Stefanie Fauquet
I think this scrub would make an adorable bridal shower favor! You still have plenty of time, so I would wait closer to the event, but they shouldn't spoil if you do make them farther in advance.

What is a sugar scrub used for? Can anyone give some insight as to this please? I know this seems a little silly...lol
Melly
A sugar scrub is used in the bath or shower to exfoliate. You rub it on your body and then rinse it off.
amanda
Hi! I made something similar to this, but I have a silly question. I have never used mason jars before. Do I have to do something to make the 2 lids into one? Or do I just leave it as 2?
Mary
I love this idea, I just ordered plastic jars with an attached wooden spoon off of ebay. My question is, how long will these last? I would like to make about 3 jars of different flavors for one person. I imagine they would last a long time beings its made with salt. Just want to make sure.
kimberly Souza
Where can i find the cane sugar and the white sugar is that just the regular sugar.
Bekah
Oooh looks so cute and yummy smelling! Could I just use plain old peppermint extract, or does it have to be peppermint oil?
Jules
I used this recipe and tripled it. Used lavender essential oil (have more to do tomorrow; peppermint and grapefruit) and it came out terrific! I added more coconut oil, as apparently in its solid form is harder to measure, but Im doing them for Christmas gifts, along with a body butter and bath salt. Will definitely use this recipe again!
Thank you!
Shelby Nash
How many Jars (and what size did you use), when you tripled the recipe?
Lilliam
Great idea. I learn how you make it and its so easy. Great gift !
Sarah
I loved this idea! If you're making as gifts, I filled a dozen half-pint jars with this recipe x5. I added in an extra half cup of coconut oil to the entire thing. It turned out perfectly, thank you!
Shawn
What font did you use for the bottom half of the sticker?
Donna
My sister made this recipe for me and our baby sister for Christmas. It was very cute and a great sugar scrub! It did not turn my hands any color. If it turned your hands red or pink, you used too much food coloring! Love it!
Kelly
Im worried that the Red food coloring is going to turn my hands red? Has anyone had this problem?
Stefanie Fauquet
No, it has not made my hands red. It's just a couple drops for the whole batch, then you use the scrub and rinse off 🙂
Cindy Stinson
Where did u purchase the sheets of sticker paper? Thanks 😄
Andrea
Hi! I just bought all the ingredients to make this for my kids' teachers. My question is, if I follow the recipe X5, how much peppermint oil am I using? I don't want it too strong that it burns the skin! The recipe says a "few" drops, is it safe for me to put, say, 12 drops in? Thanks!
Stefanie Fauquet
I would start with 7-8 drops if making a big batch and then test on skin. You can always add more, you just want enough for the scent to come through 🙂
Susan Fabro
Should you use fractionated coconut oil for this recipe? This is the kind that stays in liquid form. Thinking if you use regular coconut oil it will firm up and get solidified.
Stefanie Fauquet
I have not tried fractionated coconut oil, but I'm sure it would work well!
TERESA
Mine came out like cornmeal.. I have not had or used sugar scrubs before ..i have made one, but, not for myself ..should it's texture be more like applesauce or wet sand ?
Laurie
This did not work for me. It got hard. Is this because I used compressed coconut oil, or do I need to add more oil. Please advise.

I just made this for Christmas gifts and gave out a few at my Meditation group this afternoon. Everyone loved them, I will be making more!
I changed a few things, I put the label on top, on the lid, used red and white curling ribbon for the bow, and instead of coloring some of it pink with food coloring... I had an epiphany at Central Market last night when I saw a bulk bin of finely crushed peppermint candy. I mixed that into the white "dough" and put a little extra on top of the mixture in the jar.
Very Cute and very easy.... Thanks for such a lovely idea!!!
