These Apple Monster Mouths are a creepy twist on the classic peanut butter and apple snack! They're perfect for Halloween parties where you want to serve fun and healthy Halloween treats.
Most of the Halloween recipes I post border on the side of cute— it's hard not to love these adorable peanut butter spider cookies or these jack o lantern cupcakes. But creepy? That's a bit harder to pull off!
The funny thing about these Creepy Apple Monster Mouths is that they look fairly innocent at first, and then you realize that the peanut butter is dyed with red food coloring to resemble a bloody mouth! ...And those unassuming yogurt covered raisins or mini marshmallows are vampire fangs! You can totally enhance these healthy peanut putter apple snacks as much as you'd like depending on the intended audience. These creepy apple monster mouths are easy enough that kids can put them together on their own!
Healthy Halloween Treats
Apple Monster Mouths Ingredients:
- 1 Apple
- ¼ cup Peanut Butter
- Yogurt Covered Raisins, Almond Slivers and/or Mini Marshmallows (You can also use a combination of these to get your desired look!)
- Red Food Coloring
How to Make Apple Monster Mouths
1. Add 8 drops of red food coloring to peanut butter.
2. Slice off the sides of the apple leaving a 1" section in the middle which includes the core.
3. Slice each of the sides in half and then cut out a wedge in each to make a mouth. Tip: If you are making these up in advance, use lemon juice on cut areas of apple to minimize browning.
4. Fill mouth with dyed peanut butter.
5. If using mini marshmallows: allow them to sit open on a counter for several hours to begin to dry out, so they are easier to cut. Then use scissors and cut diagonally to shape fangs or horizontally to make teeth.
6. If using slivered almonds: Use a knife to trim almond slivers if you want a nice straight edge for teeth.
7. If using yogurt covered raisins: place as desired. If your apples are small, only one row of teeth will fit.
