All of these apple desserts taste amazing this time of year, and though it's super convenient to grab canned apple filling, it's actually super easy to make your own apple pie filling at home with just a few simple ingredients.
Apple Pie Filling
If you've never made your own apple pie filling, you don't know what you're missing. Everyone knows homemade always tastes better, but there's something absolutely irresistible about warm, homemade apple filling.
This apple pie filling recipe is meant to be used in an apple dessert, though I can confidently say, from experience, that you could eat these delicious cooked cinnamon apples as is— or use them as a topping for vanilla ice cream. Mmmmm. No one will judge.
If you do want to use this apple pie filling in an apple dessert recipe, it works wonderfully well for apple crisp, apple pie cookies and mini apple pies. Additionally, apple pie filling could be used instead of the apples called for in these recipes: Mini Apple Pie Bites, Apple Crescent Dumplings.
To prepare a whole, traditional apple pie, this recipe needs to be doubled.
Apple Pie Filling Recipe
Apple Filling Ingredients
- 4 cups apples, sliced and peeled
- ½ cup sugar
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 cup warm water
How to Make Apple Pie Filling
1. In a bowl, add ¾ cup warm water, lemon juice and sliced apples. Toss the apples in the mixture to prevent browning.
2. In a saucepan, combine cornstarch and ¼ cup of water and whisk until blended.
3. Add sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg to the saucepan, and whisk to combine.
4. Pour contents from the bowl filled with apples into the saucepan and stir. Cook on low heat for 10 minutes or until apples have softened.
5. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool and thicken before using.
